19-year-old rape victim dies in India

A 19-year-old woman who allegedly was raped by a group of men in India died Tuesday, prompting protests in New Dehli.

After a Sept. 14 attack that left the teen bloodied and paralyzed, four men were arrested in connection with the crime, according to The Guardian.

On Tuesday, hundreds of demonstrators gathered at the hospital where she died. The woman was from the Dalit caste, the lowest rung of India’s social class system.

Government data from 2018 released this year indicated that reported rapes of women took place every 15 minutes in India on average, according to Reuters.

Divya Srinivasan, a lawyer with the global women’s rights group Equality Now, said the death "demonstrates the close relationship between sexual violence and India’s discriminatory caste system,” according to the Guardian.

 

Dalit's are looked at as less than human in India.
Those rapist's will be looked at as role models in their village.
I remember one Dalit teen that was able to enroll in a college. He was beaten daily by the other students that were considered high class and cultured.

 

"The woman's family has been granted a compensation of about $34,000, a government job for a family member and a new house in the village."
