I own a truck and hired a Driver for that truck. I pay him a percentage of what the truck makes. If the broker gives me 25/hr for detention pay, how much of that should go to my driver?

well, to me, i'd say split the cost, like maybe him 25% you 75%?

but that's only about $6.25 an hour.

you know, i'd be thinking you are the owner, that truck ain't moving, you are losing money.

    or you can go 60-40 (you 60, him 40) , or 50-50

but i was always a mere company driver, so it's just my 2¢

Heck $25/hr wouldn't pay my compensation package, and I'm just a dumb company driver too....

Thanks. Was thinking of splitting 50-50. Just wanted to see what the norm was for other drivers working for small companies.

I would give the driver 89%. $20 an hr. You treat the driver well you may keep him for awhile.

Just a personal thought. Let him keep it less any fuel costs for idling. You're losing nothing and he's getting compensated for the hassle.

It is a frozen load. My reefer has been on all day waiting to get unloaded. Plus we lost out on loading today so I’m losing out. So I need to charge them something as well.

So you are punishing your driver because you made a bad business decision?
What does the driver average per hour driving? That's what you pay him. If you take a loss, well that should motivate you to create better decisions.
