Advice for leaving / quitting

Well, to each their own.

I've quit 2 companies when I was a company driver. Once I just called the OCM and explained that something personal had come up in my life (which it had) and that I'd be leaving when I got back to the yard in a couple of days. No bridge was burned.

The other company was a joke, the DM was a joke. After he tried to screw me over with my approved days off, I told him I'd clean out my truck when I got back to the yard that afternoon and leave the keys on his desk. Which I did. I burned that bridge completely down as a company driver.

 

What's hilarious is that I was able to see what they had written on my DAC Report a couple of years later when I worked on the inside of a trucking company. All they wrote was "Will not rehire." But here's the kicker, all these years later as an owner operator, I have hauled MANY loads through that same companies brokerage divison

 

I've never understood this stance. If the company is worth leaving, then they are worth staying away from. I would never go back to the same company no matter what. Especially in trucking where I can have a job tomorrow if I wanted.

 

Under normal circumstances, I'd agree. Facing a boss is the best way. Sometimes with smaller companies, the owner(s) don't make it a peaceful transition. They can't accept that a driver feels the need to move on. With a bigger outfit, I'd say clean out your truck, hand the keys over and be on the way

 

I waited until I got to a Terminal and cleaned out my truck got a rental card and turned my paperwork and Keys into the terminal manager . They asked me why I just told them I had personal issues and they left it at that . They were able to put another driver in that truck the next day and never had a issue with it .

 

This industry is pretty flexible. If you find a better pasture that is greener, they won't complain unless you leave the vehicle fubared. Most companies will see you as meat in the seat and replace you stupid quick.

 

• When I quit marten I brought the truck that I had always kept clean in and out to Mondovi and cleaned it out ...took the keys to the shop and said goodbye...never heard another word from them and my pay was in the bank the following week.

 

I have one job that I'd go back to.
If I wanted to go back to hauling dirt.
Spent 7 years with them.

I couldn't afford to stay when the economy crashed.

 

I work for a small company. 5 drivers. A new guy quit after 2 weeks - He waited til the weekend - when no one was there, dropped off his fuel and credit cards and left a note that said “Sorry, got to go!”

We all got a kick out of on Monday. This was a 50+ year old man. Grow a pair and talk to people like an adult.
