Driver Shortage (supposedly)

If you allow unacceptable behavior who's fault is it?

 

The shortage is of people that just want to work in general. If they allow themselves to be treated poorly that's on them. Bring something to the table other than a bad attitude and dirty clothes.

 

I've walked out of a few interviews before finishing the application. It's only going to go downhill from there.

 

people need to know that an interview goes both ways.

ask questions! you should be interviewing them to see if you want to work there. granted there will be alot of b/s from them though.

 

I've detected the we treat our drivers like slaves vibe from a few recruiters in the past and hung up on them .
Not a driver shortage but definitely a shortage of drivers willing to be treated like something
a manager found under theyre shoe .

 

There's no shortage of drivers. Most big city truckstops are full all day long because There's no freight that pays.

 

Okay, wait a sec, hold on here, there are mostly good drivers out there still, it's just our focus today is on the ones that screw up, with cameras everywhere. Let me tell you a little story, several years back, my daughter moved to Cal. from Milwaukee and we shipped her car. A call from the driver, who barely spoke English, showed up. Naturally, I was concerned, but as he loaded the car, I got the 411 on this guy. Turns out, he was 25 years old, came from Somalia, and through a series of gestures, and broken English, he was a very nice guy, and clearly, willing to work. He came here, which was no easy task, and was trying to make enough money to bring his family here, who probably lived in a cardboard box. I wished him a safe trip, they probably paid this kid peanuts driving an old FL Freightliner, but sure as heck, 2.5 days later, he showed up in L.A., right on schedule. Moral of story, don't sell all these drivers short, it's our own fault, like Loadout sez, nobody from America wants to work. It's a pixx poor situation, and you can't blame people from other countries wanting to come here. After all, our ancestors did the same thing.

 

I think you're applying at the wrong places.

 

Yes it's not their fault, 500 a week is great money in their eyes. I have met some very friendly and hard-working Sikhs on the road. You can't blame them, they are just trying to make a better life like the rest of us. What gets me are these companies that preach " safety" but could care less about retaining safe and experienced drivers. The first company I worked for did nothing but post pics of their new 50 drivers every week, screw their experienced ones..that's why nobody stayed. Trucking associations and big companies have a strong lobby in DC, increased freight rates will just be passed on to the consumer and they certainly don't like that. Drivers will continue to be the scapegoat for it..it's all in the name of greed and profit.
