I have had a good friend recently find out that his wife had been going through a rough patch with the long weeks spent at home while he was on the road and pretty much drained their meager savings on absolute worthless trinkets.
It was not the first time for him down this road and this is not the first time I have had a good friend tell this particular tale of woe.
I have to think this is a pretty common pitfall for truckers right?
Lets make this a judgment free thread and maybe share some stories either our own or people we know.
Any tips on protecting your hard earned wages from stuff like this?
They should really have a training video in orientation for this its so common. Not even joking.

The solution is so simple as to be idiotic.
    Have separate bank accounts.

My solution was quite simple. Told her to be out of my house by the time I got home. Wasn't the only reason, but it WAS the solution.

If you need separate banking accounts, might as well get s divorce.

See, here's the thing. The draining of the account is a symptom and until the issue is fixed doesn't matter how many band-aids you put on the symptoms, a new one will pop up.
If he truly loves her they need to talk to a marriage counselor, get rid of the OTR job, or whatever it takes to save the marriage.

    Quite true.
But in the meantime one should always be prepared.

A single bank account is not a wise thing by any reckoning.
If one party goes wonko it leaves the other with nothing.
There should always be multiple accounts. One joint and one each for each party.
The joint account would be for all the normal expenses, while every other person has a separate account for personal stuff.

And you say, "If he truly loves her"... but what about her love for him?
Where does that come into play?

But this one one reason I would never have gone OTR when I was married.
Too much time apart is never a good thing, especially for the one left at home.

    Can't disagree more.

I guess I should have said if they truly love each other. Because it is a two way street and just one cannot hold up for both. And that goes for either party.

I've been with a woman that can't be trusted with money, and I can't blame anyone who insists on separate bank accounts.

And if not separate accounts, at least take out some each paycheck in cash to stash away.

Where in the rule book does it say that falling in love with someone means you no longer need to CY own A?

My wife is the “bookie” and accountant for the family and inlaws. With the security setups we have through the bank and life alert I can’t charge anything on a card without it instantly dinging her laptop for a possible fraud charge. Lol! We haven’t had blank checks to write for at least 10 years. Cash or card only. We’ve got a very transparent and to the penny budget and business plan with to much to lose on both sides. It would be hard for anyone of us to just blow money on trinkets.

Do you also get dinged whenever she uses it?
