I have an old saying, “you can always tell a person that’s been in a fight.” It’s just an awareness of a situation. I knew a Vietnam vet that had a similar saying. (In the context of a helicopter insert) “the guys that watch the chopper leave, rarely make it back. A good soldier focuses on the trees, on the job ahead.”
In fairness, the phone only covers the underlying mindset. Only a few people are spurred to take action, in the days before phones, the majority of people who would see something like this probably wouldn’t act either. Either the “it’s somebody else’s job.” attitude or just stunned and unable to act. Since I’ve been in a few accidents myself (not truck accidents though.), marshaled a few road races or been first on the scene of an accident, I’m not shocked into inaction by a collision. So I can come up with a plan of action. Many people never see something like this in the real world so they operate in a state of disbelief.
As far as the internet keyboard warriors claiming a woman can’t open the door of an overturned truck, they probably never opened anything more difficult than a Pringles can.4mer trucker and Flat Earth Trucker Thank this.
