The oil dipstick wasn't checked. There's no oil in the motor.
Does that happen to anyone?

I could be wrong but the only way I know of to break a rod is to run it out of oil.

I've done it.
Warned the shop foreman a couple times that we had trouble brewing.. because I knew that truck.. and I could hear it coming.
He said.. "Awww... I dunno what that could be. Run her til she pops!".
She popped.
Then he said... "You threw a rod through the block!"..

I had a similar experience with a cracked piston. I told our useless mechanic that the truck was running like crap, he said to drive it, the next day it started smoking so bad that it looked like the engine was on fire...
