Never drove semi automatic. But at times when she gets loose I like to knock off the power to the ground..mayby quick like.( with the clutch pedal) Can automatics do that. Seriously don't know.

Honestly, I can't say for all trucks, because they automatics are different from brand to brand. I backed one of those new freighliners recently because a rookie who couldn't back asked me to do it. I caught hell trying to do so, it shook so much lol. The minute the road conditions worsen I slow it up. If I'm loaded too light, I won't even try it. When its icy I don't want to be too heavy either I like to be north of 25k and south of about 42k. I find it easier to control it in that weight range. Volvos can can definitely knock off the power, it's just like any other truck, once you figure out how to drive it, its gravy.

Contrast that with clowns who were smiling but are now upside down.

Pray for me, I have to drive through Wyoming tomorrow. At least I'm heavy.

One of the biggest problems as you have people out here training new drivers that don’t even have enough experience to even teach anything there should be a mandatory minimum experience requirement to be a trainer in this business

So at that critical point when you realize you've lost traction with the road, you're going to take your eyes off the road and spend a second or two looking at your shifter to make sure you correctly put it in the neutral?!?

I left the company I was with when they started switching to an entirely automatic fleet. You choose what kind of risk you're willing to accept. There are other jobs with other companies that don't make you take on that kind of risk.

I make 40% more than I did with that other company, have two weeks of paid vacation, work 5 on 2 off, then 5 on 3 off, and don't work OTR any more. The choice is yours.

If you cant shift to neutral without taking your eyes off the road then you probably shouldnt be driving.

Deadwood might have been talking about the neutral button on a auto shift? Personally I don't go to neutral, I just may want to cut the power off for a split second, in few or far between instances. Everyone has their ways of maintaining control. Hopefully better than the pics from Wyoming. Or what I see every winter. Don't let nothing slow you down, but fear and common sense.

If on heavily snow covered roads or twisting up and down hill back roads best to go to from auto to manual mode or you will be on your brakes constantly.
The trucks pictured in incident are just travelling too close together for road conditions.
