If you gotta sit and watch, why even go there and pay them in the first place?

Yeah makes me wonder. Far as oil changes I used to do it myself, but things changed. It is quicker for oil changes. Time I can used oil up and get rid of it etc. I just make up my mind its babysitting time. Some day I'm gonna get me a new 60series with 50,000 mile oil change intervals. Then only have to babysit twice a year? Troubles will be over..right?

I bet the mechanic thought it was a preset wheel end with the sleeve so you just torque to 250 ft lbs and let it rip. From the pic you posted they needed to tighten back off and then set the bearing end play with a dial indicator between .01-.05

I live about 2 miles from a large Petro. Because I have no where to go with the used oil, I let them do just an oil and filter change. But I stand right at the door and watch every move. You cannot get any more simple.
I was talking to the tech who was doing it. Nice kid, been there for about 3 months, never been a mechanic before. Was getting $9.50 an hour and it will be raised to $10 hr when he watches 3 more videos. He was glad for the instruction on the proper technique, I gave him more training than Petro ever did.

99.9 percent when different size bearings. The small outter bearing fails first when over tightened. I do set new bearings tighter than used. But proper endplay is crucial. .003 and under is goal.

You will not believe how long loose bearings will survive, and run cooler compaired to over tightened.

    With in reason.

I went to a Petro for a trailer light issue a couple years ago on my brand new reefer. Their "electrical expert" starts pulling wires from under the frame in the rear, and starts cutting and splicing. Couldn't find the problem, then I asked if he checked out the pig tail connector first. Turned out it was a break in the pig tail, and it wound up costing me $2,000 for a new wiring harness from the manufacture because they ruined my current harness. I won't let those grease monkeys do anything but change a flat tire, and even then I watch them carefully.

    Was that a drive axle?

I have had a similar ordeal when my little truck’s rear axle sprang an in inner hub seal leak. (Breather tube was jam packed solid with crud). They put it all back together and I made it about 6 or 7 miles down the road before the outer hub bearing race grenaded and welded itself to the axle stub just like that picture. $2,000 later there is a completely rebuilt rear axle after it had to be sent to the machine shop to get un-boogered. (They paid for it). My suspicion is they did not grease pack the new bearings and just assumed the oil from the splash differential would get there in time to lubricate the hub bearings. (Bad assumption).

Update: they paid my extra escort cost, plus a full truck service ( I watched)
And the money is in the bank.

Like pharmaceutical companies, they probably view the charges as ‘a cost of doing business’.

Glad they forked over the cash.

It’s trucking, I’ve had repairs fail at dealerships. Just do what too can and move on. They can afford it $120 a hour for a $15 hour employee.
Two other drivers that are on this project were ready to come get my load, told them they might also need to bring bail money.
