Just drink a lot of water before your physical, it will help dilute your urine. I always show a trace which is normal. A lot of times it caused by not drinking enough , dehydration. My last physical showed a 1 which is more than a trace but still a low level ... I still got my card

Yes thought I would resurrect it from the dead since I had this issue recently and hear it's sometimes an ongoing issue for others. Yup what u mention is a definite protein dump.

I don't think diluting the urine will help you if you are a diabetic and the blood sugar is way out of control. At around the 160 to 180 range sugar starts spilling into the urine. The test strips are going to detect this spillover. The best fix for this is to fast before the physical and do a blood sugar check before you go in. If your blood sugar is still over 140 I highly recommend you DO NOT take a physical.

    From the Medical Examiners handbook.
Regulation: A urinalysis must be obtained (dip stick)
    Test for:

    · Specific gravity

    · Protein (proteinuria)

    · Blood (hematuria)

    · Glucose (glycosuria)

See that part about Specific gravity? Trust me on this. Even If you could manage to consume enough water to dilute the sample. The test strip is still going to detect sugar AND that Specific gravity test will come back problematic.

I should have clarified that if you are diabetic drinking won't help..I have been told that often some protein in the urine is from dehydration. That's my main problem,.I never drink enough...plus getting old.

Yes, absolutely. You NEVER want to take a DOT physical dehydrated.

I have a somewhat funny story about that. Gosh, I guess it was sometime around 1994 or 1995. I had been away from home for almost 6 weeks. I was tired and was not eating right. I was also dehydrated and not really aware of it. I will never forget the day of that physical. It was in Blythe California. I got lucky and found a place to park close to the clinic. I passed everything but that urine test. The ME told me I needed to start drinking fluids. I did. Then about 2 weeks later went back to that same ME and he gave me a 2-year card. The funny part was the ME started laughing. Said see I told you so!
