I looked up Abilene Motor Express and they pay .40¢
How can people pay their bills on that?

@JohnBoy can fill you in on that; he's been there for years.

It can be done....trust me. Here's the thing. If the cpm is that low, it's a pretty good indicator that they run a lot of miles. It isn't so much cpm that matters, it's the amount of miles ran, and what that driver has going for him/her at home.

Bingo! A few things I will add, I’m here 8 years, trust me, I don’t make anywhere near that starting CPM. I do agree with everything you posted. There’s far more to my yearly earnings then CPM. There’s the $3000 per year deposited into my 401K by the company, there’s the $4600 dollars a year vacation pay, there’s the fact that I’m home a week every month without being bothered by the company. There’s the .05 a mile bonus I get every month, there’s the yearly .01 a mile I get every December for all miles run thru November 30. Now add to that the new truck I get every 18 months, the freight lanes I get to run, the same customers the 8 years I’ve been here, no layover. And finally, living in South Florida, my choices have been limited with who and where I work, Abilene is a perfect fit, financially and personally. And yes, what I have at home is also a contributing factor in my finances and soon to be retirement.

I was making .36 cpm and knocking down $65K per year and that's with taking a month off each year to vacation.
A few drivers at the same company were making $72K every year.
    Accessorial pays make the difference.
Truckers would be leaving the trucking life if all they make is CPM.
CPM is just part of the pay structure.
Drivers chasing the CPM are bypassing good driving opportunities.

Coastal something or other out of Slidell La. Took mine in 16; kept my CDL active, but with no med attachment for years. Was out of game myself for 10 plus years.
40 hours, 2500.00 came back home got my haz-mat, been running ever since.
But the industry will take a newbie with no experience who went to some school and then throw them in a rig after some ride-a-long time. Go figure.

The newbie thing blows my mind. It's all insurance companies though and they have never sat in a truck.

What was the 40 hours and 2500 for?

Sorry a 40 hour refresher. Backing, parallel parking, city driving time, interstate time, paperwork verifying background, basic stuff.
