Is it possible

I drive 110 miles round-trip everyday to work but its almost all interstate and takes 55ish minutes. I'll tell you it's all I want if i wasn't making very good money and had good seniority and my job I would either be looking for a new job or house lol

 

That must be a new requirement. It wasnt that way when I was there. When I was hired I drove 120 miles round trip as a city driver. The early outs made for a long day. I did eventually move closer. I know quite a few extra board drivers that live over 100 miles from the terminal. But, they are only doing the drive twice a week.

 

I’d look at Estes as a extraboard driver. I would have stayed at Estes if the chance to go from the bottom of the LH board to the top at a brand new terminal hadn't come along. I have about the same commute as Cardfan89.

 

What you are looking for is "extraboard" or "system" linehaul work. Most of the LTL companies that do that still run day cab tractors, and the drivers stay in a hotel every day wherever they end up at the end of their shift. They start and end their week at their home terminal but they bounce around wherever they are needed throughout the week.

ABF does that, Estes has a specific job classification for that, and many others have a certain number of linehaul drivers running that way at all times. Some people see it as the price of admission for a rookie before they can get enough seniority for a decent run, and others do it because they might be more likely to run longer miles or they have a long commute like yourself.

 

80 miles away would be too far with how my company does it's linehaul atleast at my location. each terminal is different.

 

Does every extraboard linehaul driver at every company slip seat tractors when they come back from his days off? Or can he get an assigned tractor?
I don't know much about the LTL trucking side. Trying to educate myself.

 

I'll say this: I went from a 55 mile commute to a 1 mile commute and my quality of life is much better. Even my weekends are much better because I'm not exhausted by saturday morning when I call it a week. I get a lot more stuff done on the weekend nowadays.

 

R&L has what they call “system drivers” that are solo sleeper cab line haul guys. They keep their truck after days off. They also have “floaters” that are line haul drivers without a bid. Some have assigned day cabs they may share with a daytime driver. Those guys return to their home terminal every day short of a weather delay. System drivers run out and bounce terminal to terminal for five days generally.

 

My complaint would be after returning from days off to get a f up tractor and keep that thing the entire wek until my next days off.
