You get what you pay for. There's a direct correlation between what you pay a mechanic and how good he is. If these kids are only making $9.50/hr spinning filters, all you're ever going to get are highschool kids without a clue. If you're paying the guy $40/hr, you're paying for someone who brings skills and experience to the table.

Had my truck a United Engines on OKC years ago. They are the Detroit factory store. Pick up truck in the evening and check engine light shows low coolant, I inform them and they take care of it, I walk out and mechanic is pouring green anti freeze in to my red. Stopped him and he said it wouldn’t hurt anything, I took the keys to the service manager and told him to flush it out and fill. They did.
Watched a mechanic at freight liner in Denver rebuild my steering gear box 3 times before he got It right, then try and bill me for the extra time.
Don’t know how many times I’ve left a shop and found something not tightened.
My friend had his series 60 rebuild at a dealer in Texas, had problems losing coolant, took it back and they decided to replace head gasket, that’s when they found some head bolts finger tight. Great $40 a hour mechanic. Good part is it was stripped to bare block and a Detroit rep watched the rebuild.D.Tibbitt, Opendeckin, Dave_in_AZ and 6 others Thank this. -
What ever you do, do not ever pack a oil bath bearing in grease. It has the opposite affects. It can cause bearing failure and oil contamination. I know some guys do this. That does not make it right!shatteredsquare, blairandgretchen, beastr123 and 4 others Thank this. -
Maybe I'm biased because wrenching is my chosen profession.
I've seen a few idiots in my time but it floors me when I hear how frequently some folks run into these idiots. I can only speak from experience but generally the shops that pay guys peanuts get the idiots and that's because the good outfits won't hire them. The shops that pay good generally weed out the clowns pretty quickly. They're too much of a liability for the smaller shops. Costs a lot for the single shop/2-4 shop chains to absorb the screwups caused by the inepts.D.Tibbitt and blairandgretchen Thank this. -
Took my T680 to a dealer in Oregon a few months ago to get a few small warranty items fixed, no big deal. One of the items was to replace the arm rest on the driver's seat because the old one had broken. After everything was done I got into the truck, and the new arm rest was mounted, backwards. It was in the up position and flopped back toward the sleeper. The guy who did it was probably my age and had been doing this for a very long time. I showed the service manager and he just shook his head as he had the same guy come out and do it right.
There are some great mechanics out there, but expecting them to be working at a shop with a high hourly rate isn't the norm.jamespmack, blairandgretchen and Old Man Thank this. -
Just to clarify, I don't mean high shop rate, I mean high employee wages.
