So many good old meme's were just as true then as now.
It comes down to training, (or lack of,) and personal integrity.
Apprenticeship or trade/vocational school graduates are only as good as their instructors, and their personal will to excel.

I am pretty sure I read the Ford shop manual I have a digital copy of on my laptop back when this was going on and it seemed to suggest packing them in grease. I am no authority on this however.

In reality I don't know for certain if that was done on the new/rebuilt axle I got back from the axle shop as it came back as an assembled unit and only required installation and a fill with lube. What I did do was tilt the truck up on it's side with the shop lift and allowed the gear oil to gravity feed into both wheel ends just to make sure that did not happen again, then went out and found a slanted part of the parking lot to do some slow figure-8's in and it has been fine for over 20k miles now. Both wheel ends run very cool. I will say the original bearings and races in the hubs were pretty beat up looking after 200k miles, while all the bearings that came out of the differential itself showed little if any wear, so make of that what you will.

If its an oil bath bearing, prelube it with the oil it'll be running in. Never pack it with grease. It'll actually prevent the oil from flowing into and through the bearings properly. Plus it contaminates the oil with whatever substances make up the grease.

I’ve had 3 different Speedco oil changes where the oil filters ended up leaking. One I woke up to a puddle of oil under my truck.

yes I am moron for going back and back again.

Only TAs and Petros for oil and tires. Anything else unless absolutely necessary avoid.

Problem is they charge dealership rates for apprentice work. They want to be big time and maybe one day will be, but right now they can’t seem to retain people so most of their shops have one or two guys who knows it all and the rest are fresh out of mechanic school.

You don’t even need a new one. Just throw a bypass filter on it and never change it!

Always top up the gear oil after 50 to 100 miles after a wheel end has been off. Each wheel end can hold over a pint of oil and running a splash lubed gearset low can lose a pinion bearing.
