I am getting my authority back and DOT number. Took 10 yrs off to be home with kids and drove local for company.. In position to run what n when I want. Checked into land star they wont take me said 30 yrs exp is not good enough cause I dont have 1 yr current driving in last 3 of OTR... So I decided to get my MC Have opportunity to buy older truck for cash but been finding some brokers wont accept you if you dont run eld. 5th wheel said I had to have ELD. Does any one know If convoy comfreight total quality logistics RGL specialty or any others take ELD exempt trucks and someone with new authority. Thanks

Wow. Ive never had any broker even ask me if I have an ELD. Ive got a glider and im exempt. Ive never done anything for 5th wheel because all they post for RGN's is LTL's anyway. All those others you listed ive never used either.....

I've seen the ELD question on lots of carrier packets but never been asked by a broker if I have one or which one or anything. Weird.

What state are you in, and do you plan on hauling to California? I assume you want to be ELD exempt because you want to buy a pre-2000 truck? At some point in the near future, California won't allow you to enter the state in a old truck, and other states will eventually be doing the same. Depending on who is in charge in a couple months, expect the emission control laws to drive a lot of small carriers with old equipment out of business.

I have read broker packets requiring "ELD compliant" I have a 1999 truck. I don't have an ELD, not required to have one, so I am compliant if asked.
I haven't lost any loads for not having an ELD installed.

On the true broker side it a lawyer/Fed thing they have to keep track if who runs ELDs or not. Exempt or not. Its a bs fed thing. But I tell people I am exempt but i am actually eld mandated. I just do not want them thinking I will share my logs for "tracking" purposes.

What your running into is company policy to lease on. You can pull all sorts of freight. Landstar doesn't reach outside of the circle. You can lease with them but I don't think you can pull as a true independent with them. Your just not looking into the right brokers. Now some may hold you to a 90 day wait to hire list that some do if you have a new MC/DOT. Pretty dumb I think but its policy by the company. Google truck brokers and see what you find.

If your trying to do power only, this might be a bit harder.

I have never heard of this but then again I don’t use any of the large brokerages. The eld nut huggers have been crying about exempt trucks since the law went in but they have to rewrite the whole legislation for it so I’m not worried about that and I couldn’t give two ####s about anyone in Cali

No, No it's not. There is no federal regulation for brokers to keep track of ELD trucks.

Look, I have no clue if its a lawyer told them to or a fed did. FMCSA isn't known for making it clear, truck side or broker. What I am saying here is from experience from updating broker packets. That is all. I have seen the paperwork, I have filled out the paperwork. Its something fairly new like last year or so. Lawyers talk or Feds, its a coin toss. We can say its not needed, and its probably not, but somewhere along the trail it became a thing so brokers are starting to ask. I have asked two of the main brokers I use and they say its federal. Just saying.

Now if a broker/lease on company doesn't want to work with a person because they are not running ELDs, or a 2018 and newer equipment or higher than normal insurance or even the new MC/DOT guys being told they cant sign up with them because their MC/DOT isn't at least 90 days old. That is their right as a business. Agree to disagree but that is what's on the table.

I don’t think I understand what you are saying about Landstar Chris. I am ELD exempt. I am an independent O/O, I am approved to haul for Landstar. Not leased on just as an approved carrier.

On the original poster question, the carrier packs I have filled out only ask what brand of ELD you run or if you are ELD exempt. Has not stopped me from getting approved by them.
