I usually don't try to give disparaging feedback... But you did state he didn't call. Maybe you meant he didn't call you.. or maybe you meant he still hasn't called anyone at his barn to make them aware of the damage.

Maybe I am missing something, and any of my colleagues can correct me. But when you are doing a pretrip, you have to physically review the previous DVIR (Driver Vehicle Inspection Report) and sign off that you acknowledge any written up defects or damages.

If your son signed off that there is no damages from the previous shift, then he is obviously screwed. If he signs off on his post trip that there aren't any new damages, he is now signing a federal document that no new damages were done or found during his shift.

In short, he went an entire pretrip and post trip cycle without annotating the damages. Thus, assuming all responsibility for damages to his vehicle between his pre and post trip.

If this is the case, your son had made a catastrophic screw up. Not noticing something during your pretrip is one thing. Missing it a second time during your post trip and certifying your truck is fine on your second pretrip pretty much puts the ball entirely in his court. He went a full pre and post trip cycle and is now on the hook for not only damaging the equipment, but also not for reporting it.

I hope this is not the case and that he called someone and made them aware of his situation.

Thanks for the feedback, when I said he didn't call, I meant that he hasn't called me back, not that he didn't call his company. I haven't spoken with him since his first phone call to me when he sent me the pictures. I expect that he notified them as soon as he saw the damage. He's been in several nonpreventable accidents over the years (run into by a crazy driver merging onto a major highway and fortunately there were witnesses, had the side mirror of his truck torn off by a fire truck racing to the scene of a highway accident while he was at a dead stop in traffic, etc) so he knows the drill at this point. I'll be really shocked if he did not follow procedure. As far as the official documents, I'm sure you are probably right. It is what it is at this point. I'll find out tomorrow.

Here’s one possibility that may have been overlooked.

If he did his pretrip without much in the way of light, it could be possible to have missed that.

The parts they use to make commercial vehicles with are complete trash. Not his fault the bumper is made of cheap steel and plastic.

I'd also think that your son could recall if he hit something that would cause that damage to happen, regardless of rain.

A simple walk-around of the truck would have picked up that scrape on the bumper. I still think it's no big deal. Not like half the bumper was ripped off.

Just be honest with your company and you’ll be ok. Would look a lot worse trying to fix it yourself or covering it up IMO. It’s not like he ripped off the drivers side mirror and didn’t remember it happening.

You and I may not think it is a big deal, but his employer may feel differently. They are the only one in this discussion that matters.

Thank you all, gentlemen. When I spoke with my son this morning he was not concerned at all. He told me he noted the cracked bumper etc. in his paperwork and that is what he is required to do in this kind of situation. He told me that the 2 people that use his truck during the day both have extensive histories of this kind of damage, the entire bumper has had to be replaced before because of the stuff that one of them did, and something else that involved damage from jackknifing that I didn't fully understand. He said the daytime drivers have to deal with maneuvering into difficult places and they are under time pressure, so that is a factor. There is obviously a lot of color here that I wasn't aware of in my OP. I told him that the consensus was that it was probably from hitting a bollard, and he was mildly reassured by that idea, although he questioned how it could have been from a bollard because he thought the front of the truck would probably have had more damage. I think the main thing to him was that other experienced drivers didn't think it was from hitting another vehicle and being unaware of it, which is something that he always expresses worry about to me even though the feedback I have from y'all on here is that it is very, very unlikely that a driver could come in contact with another vehicle on the highway and be totally unaware of it. So according to him, if there is any future fallout from this it will be his word against the daytime driver who didn't note anything in his paperwork at all. And he is not worried.

A magic eraser will take that paint transfer off no problem. The scuffs scratches aren’t ever coming out.
