I just don't like how safety departments tell you to always run legal and will crucify you if you get a ticket for being over on your weight or kingpin to tandem length but look the other way when it comes to the prohibition on 53 foot trailers in NYC.
Can a trucking company force you to drive into NYC ?

If you want no NYC go to a company that goes west coast only there are regionals I never went to NYC with swift my DM understood that never once did you even have that as an option for my runs and I did strictly east of the Mississippi until it was time for home time which was in Dallas. I am not pro swift there are better options terms pay and just about everything else just gotta know what you really need for that you don't even need go OTR to start your career in you can start local in most big towns.
The ones who have harvest like for cotton or grapes, or oranges or whatever you can get good pay because during the harvest they will look for any and all drivers and even get all the leased trucks in the area just so they can get it done most don't have a CDL either they just looking for bodies really. -
We get a hundred for crossing the Hudson going east, Philly is worse, Chicago, meh. Go there all the time.
The 53 foot trailer thing is a pain, but they're all over the place with them.Lonesome and Sirscrapntruckalot Thank this. -
The Google reviews on Dutch Maid are mostly positive.

To answer the question, I'll repeat another post in this thread. No, they can not force you to go to NYC. But, you may have to find another place to work after you finish your conversation.
Now, having said that, I've been sitting in a truck seat for over 30 years.... something like 34 years. I have never been to the northeast & I wont go to the northeast. No company has ever forced me to go to the northeast (including NYC) because I don't work for those companies.
I either work local or what I refer to as short regional. Like 3 or 4 states.
Now let me say that as another member posted, at one time, I owned my own truck (hotshot) & I only registered it for the states I wanted to run which was mostly, below the Mason Dixon. All southern & southeastern US.
Otherwise, I worked for one company that ran Louisiana, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas & Mississippi. Another company that shipped US & Mexico but they used common carrier for everything outside of about 350 miles. Only exception to that was occasionally I'd have to take an Atlanta load that a carrier would drop sometimes. The company I work for now (2 years), I only have to run LA, TX, AR & MS. I actually have a load in the works for TN just outside of Memphis.
I would suggest something similar for you. Just dont apply to a company that goes to NYC & that ends that.Lonesome, ibcalm19, Knucklehead and 2 others Thank this. -
