Carbon packing can be an issue on some engines, certainly this generation. Cummins has released an oil from Valvoline called "Premium Blue Restore" designed to remove carbon from the piston and piston ring lands. I've not spoken with anyone who's tried it and it is very expensive. The problem with oil consumption is that carbon deposits build-up on the upper portion of the piston and begin to scuff the liner wall. Once it's bad enough it polishes/wears the liner to the point where the ring will no longer seal. Oil consumption will then accelerate as the problem sort of feeds itself.
Cummins isx common problem???

Funny thing is when my engine started developing this problem everybody's solution was an inframe overhaul which to me is insane when 80 bucks worth howes has push consumption from a gallon every 1000 miles back to half a gallon in 3000 miles when I checked it today .
I can by a lot of howes for 30 grand lolBroke Down 69 Thanks this. -

I know this is a old thread, but the front cover suffer from leaks where the cams come through and also around the tin small covers out front. ALSO, when you pull the front cover to re seal inspect very closely for cracks in the cover. Mine was cracked right above where the air compressor sits. Very frustrating to pay $4k twice to have this fixed.
