Man I used to think I could make it without an APU, but once you drive for a company that uses them, you can't go back!!

I've actually never driven a truck without an APU. When I was in trucking school at my community college 2.5 years ago, I made a list of what I wanted in my starter company if I was going to be living in the truck OTR and only home for a total of 2 months out of the year. That included an APU and an inverter.

Many, many starter companies that hire new CDL drivers have both of these luxuries available for their drivers. Some of the other companies offered a cent or two more per mile than the starter company that I chose, while not having an APU for their drivers. I knew the extra 1 or 2 CPM would be negligible and that going with a company with an APU was the way to go for my comfort out here OTR.

Really good to see that the industry has forced companies (even starter companies) to step up their game and provide basic comforts that most Americans, even the poor ones, enjoy in the form of electricity/heating/air conditioning. APU's really are the way to go I think and like I said, my ThermoKing has been nothing but excellent to me.

I agree with you, I don't think I could ever be an OTR driver without an APU.

companies aren’t putting apu’s on truck out of the kindness of their hearts for the driver. it’s for 2 reasons 1 save on fuel and 2 because idling new egr trucks messes up the dpf system and cost a lot to fix. i have never run a truck with a apu. i will idle if need be. 25 years out here and never worked for a carrier that said i couldn’t idle to be comfortable because i would have told them where they can shove their truck

Quick off topic question. Does Marten do a human performance evaluation during orientation, or just the standard DOT physical?

When I joined them they did a muscle test(bending over, try touching your toes),ankle test(standing on the balls of you feet),bending your knees, lifting weights to a certain point and of course, the standard “pee in the cup” routine.

Yup, that's pretty much what they call a human performance evaluation. Thanks for the reply!

My left shoulder has a weekness due to rotator cuff surgery. I can drive and work, but lifting those milk crates filled with weights might give me a bit of a problem.
