Never been to NYC proper, but I ran Chicago on a daily basis a few years ago. If that's worse than NYC, then it can't be all that bad.
Can a trucking company force you to drive into NYC ?

The bridges over the Sound are tolled. We usually went to a warehouse complex in Brooklyn, but I've been to other places. Hunt's Point was an afterthought, except for one time. My exit happened to be closed for work, which happens anywhere, so crossed the Sound, went east, crossed it again, and came in the familiar way.
Timing, as long as the rush is over, isn't as important as you would think.
And a Presidential visit doesn't screw up near as much as when a President was surface moved in Chicago. I really hated that.Lonesome Thanks this. -
We even had 1 driver who slept with his window open.] It's not near as bad as you try to make it.
If you get a permit and go in and out at about 3 am you will have no problems.
Attitude is everything there tho.
And yes I prefer NYC to Chicago, -

Let's make sure we understand this is a "what if" question. Let's not scare the newbies and rookies with these answers. With the largest majority of carriers, they have a no NYC policy tied to using logistics companies that deploy cross-docks. I might also add I know of several situations where a company driver was asked to enter NYC and refused, they repowered and made the driver sit for a while. Please people stop scaring the new drivers with this boogyman thing in regard to NYC. In this, I agree 100% with @REALITY098765 .

And the reason for a permit for anything over 55 ft and 96 in. in the city. It states where and when.
What was the steel company name that had straight trucks with a 1 person cab that would put 55ft beams on each side and still be legal in NYC and you got in and out thru the roof of the cab when loaded? -
As many people are afraid of L.A. traffic as are afraid of NYC ! Just do it.....Don't you want to tell your grand kids years from now how you drove that big ol' 18 wheeler into the bronx and delivered your load ? Or, do you want to say " I was scared of New York and never went" . If you can tandem in with another truck, it will help. (assuming he has been there before). Now go, my child, and have fun
