I'm currently using a Garmin Dezl 785CAM, in conjunction with my CC atlas, a lot of caution, and about the least amount of common sense that a human can have and still survive.
It's a surprisingly effective combination.

I just received my ROVE R2-4K dash cam so I have that covered. My DEluxe Motor Carrier's Road Atlas will be at me side or at least in the truck always to double check GPS suggested routes. In school, I was a trip planning fool, Google Map-ing then creating Excel spreadsheets with turns info outlined so I have it covered. Basically, my need for the GPS is route suggestions, parking places (truck stops, rest stops, etc.). I've been a map-head since forever so I will still be doing that.
Again, THANK YOU ALL for the help and info. Now DRIVE SAFE, STAY WELL or I WILL hunt you down!

The trick is to make sure the truck settings are correct. If you set it for 11 feet high and you're actually 13 feet high. It'll take you on a 11 ft road you don't belong.
Everyone has their favorites. And hates.
I used copilot and it was as close to perfect as it could get. It's cheaper so it don't have the bells and whistles of more expensive units. But there are apps and they're free. -

Copilot on an iPad. It’s faster with no lag than any hardware unit I’ve seen from Rand McNally or Garmin. The truck routing is excellent and the routes can be modified easily using waypoints. Overall it’s cost effective since I already had an iPad that I bought used. I’ve used it for over 100,000 miles now and would not trade it for any other GPS, even if they were free.

I used copilot the entire 7 years otr.
The only time it went wrong it was my mistake. Always listened to it after that.nredfor88 Thanks this. -

CoPilot Trucker is $120/12months. Is it that much better/trustable than hardware GPS units? Seems that the review for every type of GPS, unit or App is all over the place. Seems like I may just end up planning routes and making my own on Google Maps. Time consuming fo sho. Or, sayin' you was me: would you just buy a cheap Dezl, double check it against the atlas and get going? Theory on having a truck-specific GPS is that it is, in theory, dependable. Sounds like there's a lot of "not so dependable" going on.

Point A to point B should be fairly easy to figure out with just about any GPS and your RM Atlas. The last couple of miles are where it can get tricky. Remember "Street View" and the satellite view on maps and don't be afraid to call the shipper/receiver for last mile input. Remember, most GPS directions will put you at the front door of the office, not the dock.

I’ve been using Google Maps for general use, and Hammer to double check for truck restrictions, with my trusty RM atlas as backup, and that has worked well for me. The most important thing to remember is to actually do the work of trip planning before you start, don’t just put in the address and go.
