out of the way to the weigh station?

Has nothing to do with a 5 mile radius, if a cop sees you 15 miles away and wants to make you go scale he can make you go. With portables here in the midwest they typically just have them setup somewhere that you would not know till it's too late to "dodge them" and they just motion you off to the side wherever they are set up at. They use portables alot on 2 of my frequent routes on US 67 and US 136 in IL.

 

Here in Arizona. Its 5 miles. If a cop pull you over and he think your rig need to be inspected. They will call a DPS officer who is qualfied to inspect trucks and they have mobile scale on there trucks. Now, i only heard of one person getting off. Don't know if it true or not, But he found the manual on those scales on the net. When he went to court to fight his over weight ticket. He ask when was the last time the scale was calibrated. He was lucky. He show the judge the manual he printed off and the scale went past the date. A mobile scale can only scale so much before they have to be calibrated. They have a white sticker on the mobile scale saying when they were last calibrated. you can even ask the officer when they were last calibrated. The manuals for these things from what i heard. It's illegal to post them on the net.

 

I understand what you are saying but it still has nothing to do with your location in relevance to a scale stationary or portable. They can call a DOT or any certified trooper or LEO to inspect you even if you're in the middle of BFE or make you go to the nearest location that has a scale to check your weight if they so choose!

 

I have to say state to state are different. If a police officer think your truck need to be inspected. Well, Basically. your truck is dead line until it been inspected by a qualified inspector. The scale comes to you. If the police think it need to be inspected. Then its unsafe to be on the road here in Arizona. The only time they will move the truck is if the inspector say it to dangerous to do it at it present location and it need to be move to a new location. In other words. if they call for a mobile scale. your truck is now unfit for the road until it been release by the inspector. a police officer will not escort you to a scale. The scale comes to you and so does the headaches.

if your just driving on the freeway and a police officer pulls you over. its up to the officer if you need to be inspected. if your driving and you see a sign saying all commercial trucks must exit. its a big thing. most of the inspectors will be there. so if your in a five mile radius and a cop pulls you over. He will say that you are in a five mile radius of all commercial trucks to be inspected. I know what your saying, But this is how they do it in phoenix. They will do a week of inspections. east,west,north and south of the valley. When they do this. it usually 3 to 5 different city police department working together. you might get scale in one city, but have to go to court in a different city. it a money making deal for all the city that pinch in. if your driving on I-10 going to Tuscon from phoenix. They usually leave you alone. its the other freeway that they will pull you over. now the real kicker. one day they might inspect all vans,flats. Then the next. it might be all construction trucks. like i said. I know what your saying, But this is how they do it in phoenix.

 

just be forewarned, I have seen them setup a portable during this time of year on 64 near Minatare

Like the other guy said...I always exit off the other way and keep on truckin. No problems from doing that yet.
