I've worked for many a manager but my favorites have always been driver friendly. If only they all could be. I actually had one who did road tests but didnt have a CDL. Now that one blew my mind! -
Me, I'd much rather be moving freight than riding a desk...but thank God for managers that actually Get It.Lumper Humper, McUzi, jmz and 5 others Thank this. -
F being a manager. Been there done that in a different industry. From what I can tell, being a manager in LTL would be a nightmare compared to being a driver. Being a driver is awesome.
Cardfan89 and Gearjammin' Penguin Thank this. -
To the OP.....its a decent gig and good money. Up until January you'll have all the work you want. Typically, between January and March freight tends to fall off a bit, but hang in there. Be prepared to be on call for almost anything. I've had guys come in and work the inbound dock, go home and come back and work the outbound dock. So, just be flexible and you'll be fine.
FedEx freight is a pretty good gig for drivers. Not so much for management, but good for drivers.
Good luck. -
Would anyone mind describing the dock work? I’m at FX Express now and working the ramp sort while waiting to attend RTD driving course. The sort is very physical; downloading / stacking individual packages - is the dock more about loading containers on trucks and/or around the warehouse?

If you're at an end-of-line terminal the inbound loads you see will be atrocious, which is why you take pictures before you touch it. That way the damages from the morons that can't read the words "DO NOT STACK" will be charged to the last terminal that worked that load.
You will have to restack and rewrap a pallet once in a while, sometimes due to one of the aforementioned idiots being too lazy to strap something top-heavy to the wall.Gearjammin' Penguin and PNwMtFlwr Thank this. -
@Gearjammin' Penguin I definitely concur with your statement, folks who started at the company since they were 18 and climbed the ladder from the bottom up to management are the best bosses.
I had a boss while being at OD whos been there since he was 18 heck ever since OD arrived in my city.McUzi and Gearjammin' Penguin Thank this. -
I actually applied for a City Driver pos. as well. Waiting for a call from the local area manager. Had my call with HR today. Starting pay was $23.52/hr or thereabouts and topped off at like $29.83 after 3-years. This was for a day shift mon-fri currently offering 45 hours/week w/ OT after 8 hours with potential for extra work (line-haul) to cover vacations or who knows. I did Flatbed w/ TMC last year, and have been hauling bulk milk locally all this year...but at night. While I don't have a problem w/ night driving (it sure is quiet) and I don't cross a single scale (nor do any of our drivers) and are elog exempt (agriculture exempt), I think my sleep would appreciate me going back to a day-shift...which is the only reason why I'm looking to move from my current local gig. There is one position at my place that MAY become available during the day and should I get it, I'll stay. If not, then I'll be looking for other home-daily day-shift gigs. We'll see.
