1984 NT855 BC Cummins 3
I'm trying to fix tapping noise.
I started with blown headgasket- replaced it & while running the rack a pushrod was bent- went up the road pushrod blew thru oil pan...
Now I think I have broken valve guide..
Any thoughts?
I'm a #### good driver, but not the best mechanic.
What caused this?

Hmm? Not really.
Years ago I went to a scale house on I 20. Engine was missing a push tube and the valve covers were on it. Pulled the side plate for the dipstick off and fished it out of the oil pan. Sounds like the crank found yours and sent it for a trip. Cam looked OK from the top. Went and got another push tube and ran the overhead. It ran good and left with the load.
Maybe not as bad as you thank. Picture of valve guide?
A new stamped oil pan was $700 about 30 years ago.Dino soar, Rideandrepair, spsauerland and 2 others Thank this. -
Always check the pushtubes (pushrods) for splayed or collapsed ends and cracks along the parting line of the rolled tube from end to end.
If the ends collapse a bit the tubes will be shorter and always be looser and tap.
Also could be a bad cam follower. They can crack and deform on the arm and seat for the push tube. Easy fix as long as cam wasn't damaged.
Pan can possibly be welded with a steel patch.spsauerland, Dino soar and Rideandrepair Thank this. -
By the way a push tube will not fall into the oil pan. It got caught up between the cam and the block worse than a tit in the ringer. Twisted it all up and and flattened it up some.
I hung it on the you ain't gonna believe this s t u f f board for a long time. Sorry no pictures as I threw all the junk in the trash years ago.Rideandrepair and spsauerland Thank this.
