You wouldn’t happen to drive for Hurricane Express would you? I drive for them and they have awesome spec’d trucks but I think whoever did the programming took a handful of Adderall and got a diesel mechanics degree from Google and went to town! We have 579 Pete’s with the 450/1850 X15 Cummins and 18-speed manual trans, 2.92? rears or something close to that number. First of all they started governing trucks at 66 mph on cruise & 70 on foot pedal. In top gear (18th) 66 mph = 1200 rpm. 70 mph = 1290 rpm which is the X15’s sweet spot in my opinion. Anyways, to further demolish performance...they throw in the fuel economy spec which as an O/O I’m...well...ok with I guess since we run reefer loads and almost always roll at 80k gross yet still average 7-8 mpg... however it cuts that 1850 torque back to 1300! Then for the most boneheaded parameter of them all... the f**king power derater AND speed limiter while in 16th & 17th gears!! Speed is limited to 56 mph and power is cut in half while in both 16th & 17th gears and that makes it virtually IMPOSSIBLE to efficiently or even practically go over the steep hills/mountains of the west. 16th isn’t too bad because I’m able to get about 1350 rpm out of it but then 17th falls right on its face! I can only get 1150-1200 before I feel that #### power derate kick in. Then 18th gear has full power again but shifting from 17th @ 1200 rpm puts me at 900 rpm! Going from 16th straight to 18th puts me at about 825 rpm! Coming out with all these options and parameters settings for these trucks & engines was the worst thing they could ever do man. All it does it let the office suits think they’re making more money while us drivers who actually know what the truck needs and how it operates are left to fight their incompetence. To recap... I’m neutered from 1850 to 1300 max torque at all times, I cannot just run 17th gear to compensate for the airplane gears out back going thru mountains, and if I want to run in the engine’s sweet spot... I have to drive with my right foot the whole entire day instead of cruise control. I’m currently looking into buying the cables necessary to hook up my laptop and make this awesome truck the beast it deserves to be. Hell I’m headed west on I-40 now in Albuquerque ...going to CA, and here I have a bad*** looking rig with chicken lights galore and getting passed by Swift & Prime! What a freakin embarrassment! Ok, sorry, rant over

Hey bud, really enjoyed reading your rant. However what software would this laptop require you to do what you want. And how much would this setup cost?

    Trucker2211 Thanks this.

You can download a software program for PC called Cummins PowerSpec for free from Cummins but the expensive part is the cable set/adapter you need to hook laptop computer up to your truck. You can find these cables, called INSITE 7 RP1210 Compliant Adapter, for sale on the internet from $800-$1200 depending on if you can find a good sale or not. I wouldn’t buy from a Cummins dealer though or you’ll go bankrupt! Also stay away from the generic $200 knock-offs as these won’t work due to outdated software permission settings. Here’s a screenshot from Cummins website:

I heard you can’t get access to all the parameters from those generics. If those worked at all you’d be extremely lucky especially with new trucks

U need cummins insite . Along with the 700 dollar adapter if u want to change the parameters . But are probably gonna void ur contract with ur company by messing with their equipment

Adjust the overhead(Valves). A friend had a similar issue(under warranty) and Cummins did everything they could to find out the issue, they said everything was up to date and no codes in the system. So an authorized Cummins dealer ran the over head and that solve the problem. Seems Cummins QC is not doing there job correctly.
