I think using your own backup camera would be impractical as a driver at the mega companies because with drop-and-hook freight, you're not always going to be keeping the same trailer.

I know people are gonna hate this opinion. Here it is anyway. It is the Internet so why not. Throwaway features, for throwaway trucks, and throw away drivers. Glad to be working for a company that respects drivers by giving skills their value. Rewarding drivers by a good paycheck and a hood.

I think you are dead on with this part.

It is the end results of a company getting too large to manage individuals. The Insurance companies, lawyers, and accountants take over. In our industry that leads to the driver becoming a commodity not a valuable and skilled employee, starting a death spiral away from good people management practices.

I agree. We all have to start somewhere... learn what you can, work hard, don’t crash, and then run to a good place!

@supersnackbar I believe @hopeful eyes would be interested in the problems you’re having with your truck regarding this stupidity.

if you are the one paying for the truck then no you don't need any of this garbage on it, unless you want big discounts on insurance like the companies that do put it on their trucks, then wonder why they attract the idiots.

The speed readout is the only saving grace of that adaptive cruise control.

Just wait until the first time the truck slams on full brakes for you - when you know there is no danger because you are smarter than it is.

It is very likely to happen as you are passing a slower truck on a left hand curve.
And slamming on the brakes under those conditions can cause a very quick jackknife, especially if you are going down hill.

Can it be disabled? It behaves funny in cars too.

If you have the cruise control on, it will be on as well.

Going down a hill you will probably be controlling your speed with the cruise control.
It really is the best way, especially with auto transmissions.
But if you have a lighter load and can go faster than something very heavy, you will be passing some trucks on the way down.

Even on level ground and you are at full speed with a vehicle entering from an on ramp on a left hand curve, if it is directly in front of the radar the system will go full panic stop.

You will have about a half second of warning, because it drops the throttle just a bit before the brakes kick in.
And you might hear a huff from the engine.
If that happens slam your foot on the accelerator pedal fast to override it.

The cruise control will be off at that point, so if you are going down hill keep your speed under control.

Those safety features are scary at times, because they are SO stupid.
