I have a 1989 NTC444 Cummins. 1210 CPL. Data tag says .011 intake, .023 exhaust, T.S. zero lash injectors. Someone please tell me proper method for setting overhead. Last time I set injectors to 6 in/lbs but can't remember the A,B,C settings. Google gives conflicting OBC/IBC charts for these engines. Some show .014/.027. I run this overhead a few years ago but I'm confused now. Are the Jacobs Jake's .018? Thanks

The original overhead set procedure was inner base 6 inlb .011 & .023. You used a small tool to hold the stc tappet up while setting the 6 inlb zero lash. Over time the tappet would wear & the inner base setting procedure didn't compensate for that.
The later procedure was the outer base method. You seat the injector plunger with a torque wrench. From memory the injector sets at 90 INCH lbs. .014 & .027 on the valves. Set the injector before the valves. The ABC marks are used very differently for the 2 procedures. Outer base you set the valves & injectors on the same cylinder. Don't use the chart that has you jumping between cylinders. Just find your starting point & run the firing order.
Does it have a c brake or a Jake?

One other thing to add here. Prior to setting it you should switch the stc valve into normal time & run the engine to purge the injector tappets. Take the line off the fuel pump. Cap the pump & using an air regulator connected to the line switch the valve.

Yes Jake's. I'm still lost. Which sequence? I've never messed with the STC when running the rack before and had good results. I just don't remember which sequence I used.

If you used 6 in-lbs which is also considered zero lash then you were using inner base method where you set valves on one cylinder and injector on another.

With the stc and setting them zero lash you need to get the tool that allows you to hold up the STC tappet in the injector otherwise you wont get an accurate set.

I have a 444xt but it's been a couple years since I ran the overhead. I have the service manual at home and can text or email pictures, just send me a message with your number or email. I have C brakes that get set at .018, not sure about Jakes. This is all I have in my notes on my shop computer:

    Injector and Valve adjustment sequence
Bar engine in direction of rotation, clockwise viewed from the front
    Pulley Injector Valve
    A 3 5
    B 6 3
    C 2 6
    A 4 2
    B 1 4
    C 5 1

    Firing Order 1-5-3-6-2-4

    C Brake set position
Pulley Left Hand Rotation Right Hand Rotation
    A 4 5
    B 2 3
    C 6 6
    A 3 2
    B 5 4
    C 1 1
