I've been driving 16 months now with a mega carrier. I had a minor accident while I was with my trainer after 5 days. I was put on probation for cell phone use a few months back. I have been doing really good untill a few days ago. I was coming up on a traffic light and it turned yellow at a bad spot and the road was wet. I braked as soon as it turned yellow but started skidding so I let up untill it stopped skidding and re applied the brake. It started skidding again untill I stopped. I ended up stopping 5-6 feet in front of the white line so technically I ran the light. I wasn't speeding but I'm aware now I should have been going slower in case the light turned. I'm almost certain I will be fired. My question is should I quit to avoid being fired? It's going to be tough to find another trucking job if I'm fired for safety violations. I've learned from the mistake but I don't think that will matter since I'm already on probation. I wouldn't just leave the truck sitting. I would take it to a terminal. I know they can still put whatever they want on my DAC report but I think being terminated would be worse. I am not happy with them anyways for various reasons but mainly because my check is always short and sometimes if I complain it will be on my next check and sometimes it won't be. Last week I was shorted $170. Let me know what you think please.

Serious question and not a dig...Were you looking/glancing at your cell phone when that light changed?

Slow down, if the lite is green its going to change to red. I would not worry about it, Keep an eye on your settlements. And stay off the phone.

Are you worried about a driver facing camera seeing you using your cel phone or something similar prior to this hard brake? If you quit a job every time you make a mistake that you are worried about the company not being happy about then you will never last.

Was there a ticket or accident? Company is not likely to fire you over a few feet.

Find a different place to work if you are not happy with these guys before leaving. Do not quit your job until you have been accepted with another company.

I was not on the phone and didn't get a ticket. I'm on probation because I was caught by the camera with my phone in my hand looking at it a few months ago.I was not speeding but should have been going slower for the road conditions. I noticed a little black ice too but not untill I had stopped. Wasn't much but enough that could have caused me to skid worse. The camera went off because of the hard braking. Wouldn't of had a problem stopping if the road was dry. I've hard braked on wet roads before but never skidded. I think it was the little bit of ice that was the main problem. That and not going slow enough for the road conditions. This company is pretty strict so I'm almost certain I'll be terminated. If I am, from what I've read it will be hard to get another job. I was planning on giving a two week notice untill this happened because I found a company that I'm interested in where I'll be home every night. That plan will probably not happen now.

So you've made a few bad decisions while driving. Be thankful it didn't end up worse. Talk to safety about it, find out where you stand. Good luck.

Well, since you don't KNOW what they are gonna do, you might wait until they let you know. And, of they do want to fire you, perhaps you can ask if they will let you quit instead. I'm unsure about the trucking industry on such things, but it isn't uncommon to be able to make that kind of a request and be given it in many other professions.

Problem is their mind may be made up before they call. Guess I'll see.

Already thought of that also but not sure if that'll be an option. I'll definitely ask.
