Not a bad idea, and worth trying. Radiator caps are cheap, but I had the cap replaced twice less than a year ago.
As for the pressure thing, the variable pressure is outside the radiator, the pressure inside the radiator is going to be pretty much the same at high temperatures, regardless of the external pressure because the radiator is a closed system until it reaches a set pressure differential and the thermostat (or whatever is in modern trucks) pops open.
The pressure differential between the inside and the outside of the radiator is what causes the relief valve to spill vapor (or even liquid in some cases.) At least pressure differential is the only way I can think of to have a mechanical system dump pressure from a closed system.
Taking the plunge. My journey as an O/O.

Another place that’s often overlooked is the coolant valve on the def header. It can be rebuilt with new o-rings, no need to replace the entire header unit.
062 and Farmerbob1 Thank this. -
EDIT: I will have it checked out, regardless, if it's cheap maintenance. O-rings on a 700k mile engine are certainly a potential issue.Last edited: Dec 20, 2020

Have you considered putting some dye in the system, then using a UV light to check for leaks after running it for a day or whatever? Even when I was mainly working all over Colorado, I never had any unexplained coolant loss.
You should be able to rule out any external leaks, as well as determine if the overflow tube is the source of your coolant loss.Farmerbob1 Thanks this. -

I would pressure test system and also check the EGR cooler , a small amount would probably burn off long before it ran down wards in to the system . Check Reservoir for hairline cracks , the one tube that goes to the egr cooler likes to fail .

I had mine pressure tested and no indications of leak , than the driver side EGR hose (Metal Tube ) was removed and liquid was in it indicating coolant was making its way into places it shouldnt . Thats my experience messing with this crap .
Farmerbob1 Thanks this.
