A truck driver was airlifted to the hospital on Tuesday following a crash involving multiple semi trucks in line at a weigh station.
The accident happened at around 11 a.m. in Catawba County, North Carolina.
According to the Statesville Record & Landmark, a line of tractor trailers was stopped outside of a full weigh station on the eastbound side of Interstate 40 when a semi truck driven by Christopher Cornelison
slammed into the back of a flatbed semi truck stopped in the line of traffic. The force of the impact then pushed the flatbed into a third semi truck, which crashed into a fourth rig.
The chain-reaction crash left Cornelison trapped inside of his wrecked rig, and crews worked to extricate him before loading him only a helicopter to be airlifted to a nearby hospital.
None of the other truck drivers sustained more than minor injuries in the incident.
The crash shut down both east and westbound lanes of I-40 for around three hours, and one other wreck involving semi trucks was reported, possibly as a result of the traffic caused by the initial wreck.

The weigh station was full; trucks probably backed up on the shoulder of the main highway/interstate.
When the weigh station is full, the 'bypass' light should be turned on, but states might miss out on making some money if they do that.Final Drive, Rollr4872, BoostedTeg and 17 others Thank this. -
How many of these drivers crawl up each other's ### every time traffic lines up? 90% or better. A little space does wonders.

That’s what can happen when they let them back up out onto the Interstate. Should be illegal. Not the first time it’s happened. Four wheelers have slammed into stopped Trucks also. In the name of safety. What a joke.

The eastbound has at least a 200 yard exit ramp.TokyoJoe and Rideandrepair Thank this. -
Defund the scales! There not safe!!!

Unless a sign specifically says trucks must line up on the shoulder like some scales in Michigan & Indiana do, I blow right on by if the ramp is full.
I will not sit on a interstate travel lane waiting to scale .. Haven't been chased down yet...Final Drive, LoSt_AgAiN, justcarhaulin and 18 others Thank this.
