There seems to have been a lot of confusion in my thread "What are the disadvantages of being an OTR LTL driver" because when I made the OP, I thought that LTL linehaul work and OTR LTL are the exact same thing. Posters on that thread have informed me that LTL Linehaul and OTR LTL are not the same thing.

I created this thread so that I don't hijack the "What are the disadvantages" thread with a different topic.

What is the difference between LTL linehaul work and OTR drivers who do LTL runs?

Line haul is out and back. For example: Leave your home terminal, go make your deliveries or do your trailer switch and return to home terminal, typically all in one shift.

OTR is as it sounds - over the road. Leave home terminal, make your drops or trailer switch and continue on around the country until they get you back home. (However many days or weeks that may be).

Oh and don’t forget most LTL company’s pay you for breakdown time, drop and hooks, fueling, and waiting on your freight.

Hijack the other thread? You may as well delete it.

How about we approach this differently, instead of wasting experienced hands time.

WHAT IS THE QUESTION YOU ARE SEEKING TO ANSWER - ?

At companies like mine, LTL Linehaul drivers are home at the end of every shift. We don’t have any OTR positions. We do contract with a mega carrier for some OTR though, I think mostly stuff that needs to be ran straight through from coast-to-coast.

OTR LTL is just a regular OTR load with multiple stops. There's nothing truly LTL about it, especially not the pay.

Linehaul in the sense that we know is terminal to terminal only. Now not all companies operate the same way in that regard as far as where the driver finishes his shift. You could be back home the same day or you could lay down at a bunk house or a hotel.

That’s not the same animal as multiple stops on an OTR run like some of the Abilene guys like @JohnBoy have been seeing a lot of lately.
