Maybe this has been addressed recently, but when I've searched these items the posts were relatively outdated. My first question aside from brand loyalty why do some of you prefer either Detroit or ISX Cummins? Secondly, where is the best source to research axles? Available options are the Detroit, Meritor, or Hendrickson. Yes I'm specing a Cascadia rather than Pete or KW.
Despite the hate the plastic gets, I've seen them do well even with the crappy maintenance programs of large fleets, so it stands to reason that at a lower cost they should be more profitable than paying for style.

Detroit engine are good but have trouble will emissions box at about 600,000 miles. Cummins is good but had problem with fuel pumps going bad in first couple year ISX come out. They had oil problem with top cams shafts going bad. They have trouble with carbon build up inside piston rings and stuff. So no perfect engine today

Any particular reason on the axle choice? So far the only accurate information I've found differentiating them is that the Detroit is supposed to be a better turn radius, and better performance using a Detroit engine/trans/ axles combination.

Right now I'm working on research, waiting to see how the market plays before I commit to a purchase.

Would I be correct presuming that a gear ratio, other than 2.55 - 2.79 (which works good in the Midwest for the most part) for rather sporadic excursions over the Rockies, say climbing up there up to 10 times a year on I - 80 or I -90 going to West Coast and back - and assuming to be on a heavier side 75 - 80K lbs, should not matter much?
