What to do when no scales are available?

    Why should the SHIPPER be responsible for the short comings of truck operators.
    The shipper only knows amount of product to be shipped and if Billy Bob comes in with his long nosed, heavy motor, heavy 18 speed, double frame truck etc, etc, and is too heavy, why is that the shippers fault?

    And has been mentioned On Board Scales. Around $350 you get the weight on your phone. Don't even have to get out of your truck.

    "What to do when no scales are available?"

    Unless you are boondocking, 95% of the time you will be within 20 miles or less, of a CAT Scale. Simply "Google, Bing, Duck Go", CAT Scale near me. It really is not Rocket Surgery.

    Download Trucker Path, it can bail you out when a CAT scale isn't available, and as already noted get a truckstop guide.

    Sometimes there just aren't any weight stations around its not like there's a truck stop near every warehouse, I remember picking up a load of wine from the Napa Valley just north of San Fransisco there were no truck stops with scales near by the only thing that I could use was a weight bridge at a quarry where you had to write down your individual axle weights and tally them up my first attempt they'd loaded me well above the 80,000 lb max so had to do a U- turn run all the way back to the winery and get them to remove a pallet when I returned to the quarry and reweighed the load is was now under 80,000 lb but still over on the drive wheels unfortunately the lever was not working properly and would not allow me to pull the pin to slide the trailer back a few holes I went through the POE in Sacramento and to my astonishment they gave me the green light no more POE till Utah when I got to the Flying J just outside of Wells NV on the I - 80 I thought , think I've used up what ever good fortune I may have had left back in CA so I put the trailer on the official CAT scale at the Flying J I was able to find another truck driver that was able to hold the lever down for me and slid the trailer back a few holes and bobs your uncle weighted it again good to go still to this day don't know how I got a free pass at the POE in CA.

    Go around it or just go by it..

    9 times out of 10 they aren't coming out to chase you down.

    I may be wrong but I don’t think California really cares if you’re overweight on an axle as long as you are under gross. I swapped a load once with a driver in LA headed for Seattle. Guy said he scaled it and was legal at the shipper. I went past two scales in California got green lit. Got into Oregon and was hit with a 150 fine for being 1000 pounds overweight on the tandems at the first scale house.

    Two lessons right there. NEVER trust a shippers scale. NEVER EVER EVER Trust another driver!:D:rolleyes:
