I know this has been beat to death but I’m still not clear on the law. I do not want to become a felon because of some commie jurisdiction like Chicago or New Jersey.

No better to be carried by 6 posts as I do not want to spend 20k and become a felon.

Is there any way to carry a firearm through Chicago or New Jersey? I’d love to carry my AK pistol but I know that isn’t going to fly.

Could I at least have a 5shot .38? What about a shotgun? I have some small lockable pistol safes that I could separate gun and ammo if necessary. Sounds stupid, but if I have to sleep in a sketchy area I’d like to have it instead of my puny bear spray.

Can I get some answers from guys that fear the courts more than death?

I’m tempted to contact a Chicago lawyer, but who can even trust what they say...

I know this is posted for rv/car carry but the law applies to all motor vehicles. Still, someone else will be along with a better answer. Or a different one anyway.

Transport unloaded, but loaded in sleeper is OK. I could live with that. Just takes repetitive discipline to remain legal.

I go into NYC, NJ, Maryland, Chicago, and Ca.

When traveling into those states that do not recognize my CCP I have two lock boxes with a small padlock. One for my gun, the other for the ammo. They then go in the cabinet behind the drivers seat.

In those states your gun and ammo have to be stored separately and not in the driving area.

I have had multiple level one inspections and never had a problem.

Here are the laws for NY, Il, & Ca

IL prohibits rifles with barrels less than 16 in, shotguns with barrel less than 18 in, and I think any long gun must have overall length of 26 in.

IL also has a restriction on firearm with low-melting point. I don't know if that is an attempt to ban polymer pistols, the majority of modern pistols.

Remember, some half-breed pistol/rifle/pistol with a brace etc may or may not be legal in the place where you have contact with a cop. It's not a good idea to carry something that requires a generous interpretation of law or a weapon right on the changing border between legal/prohibited. The cop isn't a lawyer. He's not going to do extensive legal research on the spot. Depending on his mood, if he's not sure if the gun is legal he may invite you to sleep in jail.

The NRA, Gun Owners of America, US Concealed Carry, etc have more accurate info than the accumulated wisdom of truck drivers about the subject. If you were going to be a baker or carpenter you wouldn't likely go to bakery or carpenter web sites to find out about guns. Go to the gun sites for gun law help. They have pretty clear info and you can search instead of wating for someone to read and answer your question.

Illinois allows you to carry on your person if you have a valid permit from your home state or your home state does not require a permit.

Regarding Chicago, Illinois law preempts Chicago's laws, so most are unenforceable. Mag capacity for example.

New York, New Jersey and California, you'd better lock that bad boy up!

The right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed

I pack mine away. Covered up by my blanket , pillows and teddy bear

    Want to search ???

    1) I remain silent
    2) no searches
    3) I want my lawyer

Put it on a business card ... on the other side is my lawyers contact info. If cops want to go further they need my attorney to be present.
