Drove 2 days for interview only to be told the positions filled

I was planning on moving to Texas in a few weeks and got called by a company to come in for an interview. They told me that they were looking for a driver and I told them I was going to be a few weeks but that I could come down early if they really needed me to. They called me back 2 more times about coming in so I ended up packing all my stuff in a rush and I drove 20 hours in 1 day to get there. I arrived 2 days after they called (I had to book a hotel for 2 weeks because my house wasn’t ready). When I got to Texas I called them and texted the manager but got no reply. I called again the next day and they finally answered only to tell me that the position was filled.

Is it normal for something like this to happen? I wasted 800$ on a hotel and drove all that way now I have to drive back to NJ. They couldn’t even bother to call or text me back saying the position was filled when I told them I was on my way. How common is this?

 

It took me a month to find a job I was qualified for since I don’t have a lot of experience. I’m going to apply to a few places but I doubt I can find one this quickly. I left all my stuff in NJ (it’s packed up and ready to move I packed up my whole apartment in a day ) and I was going to have my brother drive it down since I had no time to rent a truck. I might as well just go back up there.

 

I’m actually in Charlotte NC not Texas. I just said Texas so they wouldn’t know it’s me who posted on here but I don’t even care at this point.
