So i finally decided to just bite the bullet and buy myself a rig after 10 years of waffleing. Ive gotten all the other details worked out under the company i want to run with and with my bank and my down payments and pre approvals ready to go as well as a fat "oh crap" fund that should fix anything shy of a blown engine.

Last big question now is what truck to roll with. I am doing end dump work with most loads at 80k and a few at 85500. So i figured id poke in here and get some opinions to see if i overlooked anything and opinions on the trucks and engines. Right now ive narrowed it down to three potentials.

    A 2016 pete 579 with a 455hp MX-13 and a 3.42 gearing, and 9/13 speed

    A 2016 lonestar ISX 450 horse with 3.36 gearing and a 13 speed allison.

    And a 2017 T680 with a MX-13 with 3.42 gearing. and 9/13

All three are within about a grand of each other and within 20k miles of each other save the 2017 which has about 120k more miles then the 2016s.

Im leaning towards the pete as it seems a nice mix of what i want and by far the one im most comfortable with in terms of usage (normally i drive a 389k) but id love to hear what you folks think.

Stay away from all of them. Paccar’s, your gonna have emissions issues and the automatic will eventually give you issues. Keep looking

its not an auto though, its a 9/13 manual that im having set to 13 speed. As for the paccars having issues...what kind if you dont mind my asking? im used to running kittys and am avoiding detroits like the plauge after my experinces at the last place i worked.

As for history the 579 was a loaner truck for the local shop and comes with a full repair and maintaince history and has had only 9 codes in 400k miles.

The lonestar is a big fleet trade in and is a huge ?

the T680 is from a local fleet and was a mail delivery truck so never went over 60k.

I wouldn’t touch anything that came from a big fleet.

Also a little more info after i pulled up my emails on the trucks for the 579 the dealer had current dyno and blowby tests that were within specs and less then 3 weeks old and offered to provide them as well as full oil analysis and ecm dump if requested. The 9 codes were 3 related to recall items 4 for a bad sensor 1 was for a bad fuel injector and the last was related to a bad patch of fuel.

The western the guy wont provide any of the above but will let me do so if i pay.

and the T680 was from the company a family member works for and he said he doesnt remimber there being problems with that unit when he used it, hence why its on the list.

Honestly i would prefer a glider with a cat but every one that has fallen in my price range has had so many serious problems they arent an option unless i want to take a huge risk on an older banged up truck that is just as likely to go boom as not.

So im trying to find something that is a mix of affordable, lowish miles, new enough to finance at a reasionable intrest rate at my bank without needing to go to a big fleet, good mileage and enough power to haul anything i throw at it. Likely im asking for the stars if my experince with my last jobs fleet of volvos with D13s was any indication....but well this is where i am at.

Buy brand new and get a extended warranty, I'm thinking Volvo.

yea volvo is NOT happening. last job bought 50 with D13s and every single one of them were yard queens and falling apart after 6 months. Less then not impressed. Nothing says quality like a 6 month old 2020 truck having a door fall off....literally...
