Hey everyone
This is my first time posting here. I’ve been lurking for some time reading and trying to take as much knowledge away from this place as I can. I am new to the world of freight and trucking. I am starting a trucking company and need to get my CDL. I live in Greenville SC area. I won’t be driving much but I need it for better rates on insurance and if I need to take out a loan I’ve been told it helps. What I am needing to know is are there any companies in SC that will rent me a truck for a day to take my road test? Or will a truck driving school rent me truck time to practice and take the test? I’ve called a couple of schools in my area and haven’t gotten anywhere. They are all on a skeleton crew due to COVID. I was told the DMV would have a list but they told me they can’t give out info. Not sure why but have you ever tried to question someone that works at the DMV? I don’t have time to go to driving school. I work 50-60 hours a week so I am looking for some advice. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks y’all.

Unless you have prior driving experience, do you honestly think that you can practice for a few hours and be able to pass the road test at DMV? No one will let you borrow or rent a truck under those circumstances because it is pretty much guaranteed that you will do some damage somewhere.

Some states have quickie 1 or 2 day cdl training, but I can't find any in SC on Bing search engine.

No sir. I know enough to know that would be not only foolish but dangerous as well. I do not have OTR experience but I have driven tractor trailers many times. Farming in a small town it was a given that you could and would drive. That does not in any way qualify me to do the hard job of safe driving cross country and making deadlines, loading, etc but I do know the basic entry level skills of driving a big truck with a 53ft dry van.

this notion of renting a truck to someone who has no CDL would be a huge liability and all you want is own a business even the beat-up training trucks they don't want be destroyed. That is money for another truck should you crash it mostly your gonna need go through training willing bet those trainers in those seats make your not gonna wreck it and have it in a parking lot near empty. I have seen people still do serious damage one drove out the empty parking lot only not to stop when coming to street from parking lot and hit a car not just any car it was a state trooper idk what happened I was shopping and saw this I was like well he's screwed.

What job are you working at now? You're getting 50 to 60 hours a week so some should be OT. I hope you made huge money there to think about doing this or you inherited a bunch.
If you start a trucking company with no experience you're going to be the guy to answer all the calls from your drivers who are out and from planners, brokers etc. You could easily wind up working a lot more than 50 to 60 hours a week and at all hours of the day/night and weekend.
Did you find out what insurance, licenses and all the other expenses are going to be?
I don't get it, why freight/trucking with no experience?firemedic2816 and austinmike Thank this. -
As soon as you find out that Insurance is $25,000 a yr for new entrants that will be the end of that I suppose.

Well I appreciate everyone’s input. I have done my research and I have written my business plan. (I can hear you guys laugh at that!) Ans you guys are right the cost is staggering to get started but it’s something I want to do. I work from home now days and unfortunately being salary OT isn’t on the table. They kind of get you like that but salary has its benefits too I suppose. And I agree starting off with no experience seems nuts but it’s something that’s been in my family in one way or another for years and years. I’m sure this is laughable to some and that’s ok! I wasn’t looking for anyone to say hey man way to go it’s going to be easy!! Let’s be honest it will be blood sweat and tears to make it work but in the end it’s something I can be proud of! Thanks everyone
Chinatown Thanks this.
