Sounds like they don't want their fuel too bad, so why should they get any?

Texas changes their weight restrictions on their secondary roads from time to time to spread out the wear and tear. Yes, you may get a ticket if you drive on a road that has a weight restriction less than your weight. Fortunately they don't change them very often.

The Texas 58,420 max limit was written up on April 20, 1958 and went into law on Oct 21, 1959 in response to the 1956 federal increase to 73,280. It was based on the outer bridge of a 37 foot length tractor trailer and was the max legal weight limit in Texas on all roads thru ‘59. 20% of the old roads from that time period still have that weight limit. In 1960 they ammended it and raised the limits to 72,000. All roads in Texas except the federal interstates technically are still limited to 72,000.

I went to Mayors court in a small town near for me one years ago....the Mayor dismissed it and said don't use that road again.

I went down a totally legit 2 lane truck road just the other day in Indiana in the middle of nowhere. It makes a hard right turn and comes to a T. Go straight and it's a 19 ton weight restricted bridge. Go left and it says no trucks allowed. There were no posted signs on the road leading up to this fork.

    Not my #### fault.

No sir, it's not. Signs are to be placed where you have the opportunity to detour or turn around.
Section 1A.02 Principles of Traffic Control Devices Support: 01 This Manual contains the basic principles that govern the design and use of traffic control devices for all streets, highways, bikeways, and private roads open to public travel (see definition in Section 1A.13) regardless of type or class or the public agency, official, or owner having jurisdiction. This Manual’s text specifies the restriction on the use of a device if it is intended for limited application or for a specific system. It is important that these principles be given primary consideration in the selection and application of each device. Guidance: 02 To be effective, a traffic control device should meet five basic requirements: A. Fulfill a need; B. Command attention; C. Convey a clear, simple meaning; D. Command respect from road users; and E. Give adequate time for proper response.

    And there's more...

Section 2B.59 Weight Limit Signs 06 If used, the Weight Limit sign (see Figure 2B-29) shall be located in advance of the applicable section of highway or structure. Guidance: 07 If used, the Weight Limit sign with an advisory distance ahead legend should be placed at approach road intersections or other points where prohibited vehicles can detour or turn around.
