I'm processing for USPS Tractor Trailer Operator for my second time. First time I didn't have enough semi truck experience (6 months min). Now I do and wondering how is it working there now. A few years ago I read on here a lot of OT at many places. Around here (Chicago) I see mostly short trailers being pulled by trucks but don't know what else they have.

It's an hourly paying union job (American Postal Workers Union), Motor Vehicle Services (MVS) Division.

Find out where the Chicago APWU union hall is and pay a visit, tell them your plan and see if they have any pointers for you.

There's a president of the local union, then there is a guy in charge of the MVS part. The MVS guy can probably give you some good info. He's going to know the inside scoop on everything.

I pulled mail been a long time ago.USPS is like a lot of other union jobs it takes you a long time to(1) get to top pay was 3 years it could have changed that (2) years to get enough seniority to work full time.Benefits are good wasn’t as good as master freight teamsters package pension if you can stick with it.Chicago I don’t know what center you are looking at but probably still bigger then Charlotte. If you’re single or your wife has a good job so you can get through the lean years till you build seniority you will do good

I've been with the post office a little over three years out of Southern California, alot depends on if it's a PSE position or PTF, top pay is about eight years in at around 34$ an hour, you'll be a level 8 so you'd be doing tractor trailer runs and Bob tail runs as well. Our newer equipment is international tractors and the bobtails are peterbilts, we run mostly 53's now since the old 45's are way past their days, supposedly getting 48's but like any other government job, hurry up and wait.

Mail contract carriers are not a lot times that good of jobs again most of the time it depends on seniority and you do get what they at least once called health benefits pay depends on run how much I think you said $5 an hour you lose that after 40 hours if your even lucky enough to get 40 hour week. For example I worked for a company MCA it’s been over 20 years ago out of Jacksonville FL terminal 30 drivers only 4 had 40 hours a week runs the rest worked anywhere from 30 to 34 a week. While you did get the health benefit pay the health insurance was very expensive.

I was hired on but never took the job in the northeast. Top pay was around $28-29/hr and took a long time to get there. You also have to pay for your benefits. Plus, you'll be working odd hours for quite a while, unless you have a bunch of guys retire and that opens up good bids. They also give alot of their runs out to sub-contractors. You might be better off buying a daycab and trying to get a contract with them hauling their mail, then you make more money.

I believe the job has benefits stated on the original job posting that I can not pull up now. I know it takes time to get top pay and I can live with that. My last job LTL was back breaking work and this seems less strenuous (I hope).

At times it isn't less back breaking. We've had a few drivers quit a few weeks in because they thought it was all drop and hook and they wouldn't have to load or unload their own trailer. It isn't drop and hook and 90% of the time you'll load and unload your own trailer or 11 ton with possible help from Mail handlers. All the equipment that holds mail is on wheels, but it can still be heavy depending on if the dock is on an incline or if you have to use the lift gate on an 11 ton. Skids can be very heavy even with a pallet jack like the costco magazines that go out, and if you deliver DPS to a station each apc can weigh around 300 pounds, some stations can get 34 apcs. DPS is the letter mail that goes in your mailbox.
