Ok so I’m pulling a tri axel lowboy pulling heavy coils shotgun style on an I beam rack. I’ve heard that all my chains go thru the eye of the coil and I’ve heard that I have to go 2 thru the eye and 3 over the top. So my question is what’s the right way to secure my coil?

I'm pretty sure the WEIGHT might have something to do with it LOL. And I think the overs are straps not chains if I'm tracking what you're saying...
And definitely look at the reference above for C and X and what's legal where....

This is going to be one of those posts where it seems as if I am trying to be an A Hole, but I am not...in fact, I am actually trying to help you. By how you posted your questions in the opening post, I get the feel that you do not fully understand the securement regs. You are telling me what you were told, not what the regs state.

If you are trying to secure an object that weighs 50,000 lbs and you have 3/8 grade 70 chain, how many points of securement would you need for indirect securement?

For a coil, suicide or shotgun, I would count the securement as direct, since it is pulling in a direction and needs an opposite securement. I have seen people throw straps over the top of a shotgun coil, but I wouldn’t count these as part of the WLL (working load limit) of the needed securement. So, simply stated my main securement would be through the eye of a coil.

A shotgun coil (eye length way)
The straps over the top are considered securement, they are providing the “down force”
The chains through the eye (center) provide the forward/backward and side to side.

Not using any straps. Company gave me 1/2 chain grade 70 with 1/2 ratchet binders rated at 13000. The coils are anywhere from 57,000to 90,000 lbs. I know I’m using the correct number of chains per weight and wll I’ve pulled the coils both ways being all thru the eye and eye and over the top. I appreciate your feed back and don’t think ur being an A hole.

Thanks for the pics. The chains across the top do nothing to prevent the coil from telescoping. I would put them through the eye. I am trying to figure out how to say this...you need a securement that starts at the center of the coil, through the eye, and back to the center, to aid in preventing telescoping. Both sides since its direct securement.

Apparently Ca requires at least one over the top if they are narrow and 2 if longer however they aren’t real specific with what they consider longer or narrow. I guess over securing is better then under

While fmcsa now requires one over the top. I feel the same way. To me its useless. Not many think about one telescoping.

X chain first two, add pairs of C chains till requires wll is met.
