When you hop in a truck and drive for free it’s because of a pure love of the road ... or meth ... or mental illness. Let’s be honest if you’ve ever sat at a full walk up counter at a TA restaurant and listened to the conversations, it’s hard to tell the difference.

It takes skill to clear the crossmember when pulling out from under a trailer without lowering the landing gear.... 3...2...1...launch....

In a standard highway configured reefer/van truck sure, but yard trucks, some flatbed (Hunt) trucks, and even a few oddball o/o trucks have incline rails mounted behind the fifth wheel, extending past and slightly above the rear drives that allow a truck to get under a low trailer without scraping the drives. With those, you could slide out from under a trailer and not even realize the landing gear was still up until the trailer hit the ground.

    Jarhed1964 Thanks this.

Very true. Before I got my CDL, I worked in the live haul dept of a chicken plant. And occasionally would be a fill in spotter truck yard driver. We had one spotter truck with a screwed up 5th wheel that would latch enough to pass the tug test, but as you turned, it would release and the trailer would keep going straight...which is ok if it's a trailer of empty cages, but a fully loaded one falling off would fold the gear or push them thru the rotten deck.
