The 34 hour reset was a gimme to the motor carriers by making more drivers available on Monday with a full 70.

Under the recap only system, I had local guys doing two loads a day. Using their recap if they logged a total of 12 hours a day five days a week, weekends off they would hit 72 hours on Monday so they couldn't do two loads every day in the 10 hours left for the 8th day. If they did the day in 11 hours their seven day recap will always have 15 hours available every day.

    11 x 7 = 66 for an 8 day total subtract 11 hours makes the new 7 day total 55, 70 hours less 55 = 15

By allowing the reset , a driver can work 14 hours a day, five days a week which puts him right at 70 hours in 5 days but the reset over the weekend lets him start again on Monday with a full 70.

So instead of the 70 in 8 the reset lets the carrier work the driver 14 hours a day, 5 days a week, every week at the expense of the driver's ability to get the rest the HOS was supposed to create
