I think the limit on transporting diesel before you need hazmat is 119 gallons. Would it be legal to permanently mount something like this 110 Gallon DOT Aluminum Rectangular Refueling Transfer Tank on the frame rails behind the cab of my truck?

Just for clarification. Will it be used for fueling other equipment or add capacity to the truck?

Potentially both.

You could remove the step box on the right side and put a tank there. @cke has tanks under the door. Maybe he can give you a idea of the capacity and dimensions.

This is going on a Mack. There isn’t a place there for a tank. I have plenty of room on frame rails on top.

I’ve seen those kind of set up’s, behind the cab, usually PTO(Hydraulic oil) set up. I don’t know if it would be legal for fuel.

Is there a law on fuel tanks? And position.
-
You can use it as long as you have a tank that will not splash fuel onto any part of the exhaust or related equipment if overfilled.

Legal and has been done for years. Couple of trucking company’s out of Houston ran them during the Alcan Pipeline Construction. Gave them more range.
A slick thing you can do is since it will be sitting higher than the side tanks is plumb hose into a fitting on the top of one of the side tanks were a return line goes and a shutoff valve on the aux tank. When low open valve and let gravity feed the other tank. You won’t need a pump. -
I remember a couple co's did that back in 70's/80's. Two 150 gal saddle tanks plus 3rd tank on frame rails. #### near made coast to coast run without stopping for fuel. I believe their mindset was not paying truck stop prices for fuel and wasting time fueling too.
Diesel Dave Thanks this.
