Wow. KW is speccing highway trucks with electric drives now? I need to look at that. The fuel savings on a hybrid diesel electric with regenerative braking could be enormous.

Well, I have hit a new cold record for me, I think.

Shut down in Sidney, NE and the temperature is -24 NOT including wind chill.

Leaving the lights on tonight so the truck will start more often due to battery draw.

    Rideandrepair and dwells40 Thank this.

You are not idling but keeping the lights on? Never heard of that. I have a truck in Iowa headed for NE and he’s idling at -8. I’d be #### concerned if he was shut off right now.

You must have the opti idle? Makes more sense now that I think about it in that regard.

Yup, it's an opti-idle truck. It's supposed to stay running in temps below -10, but the outside temp thermometer on the truck always reads a bit warm. It's showing -5, but I guarantee the oil pan is much colder.

I haven't asked the shop what temp mine is supposed to idle at, but personal rule, I idle at 0 and below, fuel treatment or not. I only run fuel treatment if it's supposed to be below 15, and then Opti Idle keeps everything nice and warm.

never shut off below zero only asking for problems plus your in line for service behind all the other froze up trucks. Little bit of fuel cost is not worth the big bucks it will cost later

I've always ran mine at 20 or below.

That's about the point the Espar quits working unless the fuel is good enough for colder. I've gotten lucky with a few 10* but nothing colder.

Same here. Below 20 and while on the road, I just idle.
The potential fuel saving is not worth the risk of not starting, plus I believe cold starts do more harm to the engine than idling.
Heck, even this morning, in my own yard, I spent 2hrs trying to start my spare truck, which does not have a block heater. Wish I just left it running after switching trailers on Saturday
