I got a call from Ryder (I applied a few weeks ago) they want to interview me for an OTR position with a straight sleeper truck. I guess it’s like those panther express style trucks. It’s delivering tires. They said some drivers are making 1500 a week. It’s paid hourly (20/hr) and extra per delivery. Does anyone know what the real pay would be like? And would this position be good with Ryder? I’ve driven TT and straight trucks before but never with Ryder. I also got a position for mobile fueling so I’m trying to decide between the two. The mobile fueling pays around 50k a year but I don’t really know the pay for that because they won’t give me a straight answer about how many hours I would be working.

    Thanks

Are you responsible for "loading" and "unloading" the tires? I have hauled 53' trailers loaded with tires. It takes those warehouse guys HOURS to load and unload those things. Roll em' in one or two at a time, stack/lace them up. Then, unstack/unlace them on the other end and roll them off one or two at a time. Very labor intensive and DIRTY JOB!

I did several tire loads going to Discount Tire stores. Some were a little hard to get into with a 53 but not that bad. I would run my miles, be at my first stop when they opened, and get 4 to 5 drops done by 4 pm. Yes, I had to get the tires to the back of the trailer and was frequently rolling them uphill. But by laying a tire on the trailer floor, I got good at bouncing tires off of the one on the floor and they would shoot to the end of the trailer. Paid $400 to unload 5 stores.

I've hauled tires also. Nothing to it. Places where I delivered said, "Roll them out the back of the trailer and let them hit the ground; we have it from there."

How long did it take you to roll 600-700 tires out of a 53' trailer. It's not like they are all upright and ready to roll off. The ones I have seen are stacked and laced together. That's lots of pulling and lifting.

Didn't take too long. No lifting, just pull it off the stack and let it hit the trailer floor, then roll it off. I looked at it as a good workout to help me stay in good physical condition; used it to my advantage. I had quit smoking 3 packs a day after 21 yrs. and didn't take long to get into top physical condition.

Tire loads suck. Take the fueling job.
No it's not fun or easy loading and unloading tires.
Let the other guy kill himself.

    Work smart not hard.
You'll make more doing a whole lot less
    With fueling job.
You got nothing to prove to anybody by humping
    Tires all day.

I hear RYDER is very safety conscious. Cameras facing in and out, all kinds of sensors so you don't hit things, one guy got a writeup because a supervisor said he got out of the truck wrong. Too nitpicky for me.

Are those Otr expediter trucks harder to back in than a 53ft trailer? And did you get paid per hour or only per load?

I think the tire job pays more (if the guy from Ryder was telling the truth), plus I can just stay OTR and save money on a cheaper apartment. The fuel job pays 20/hr too, but they said it’s only a 40 hr work week. Not sure how because they also said it’s 11 hrs a day, 5 days a week. Neither really gave me straight answers.
