Any single truck operations keep a spare truck around?

I have. But it just kind of worked out that way by coincidence.

Disclaimer- Have 4 trucks.

The older one built the fleet, and it's just a great truck.
Actually probably going to sell him next week.

I bought the one I'm sitting in now cause they were giving it away. Didn't especially need it.

The overhead on either isn't much. The thing is, when they sit, weird #### starts happening. Leaks. Seals.

 

I know Great West will let you put trucks on spare if you don’t have drivers for them.

 

The problem with that is that the spare truck is guaranteed to be a few hundred miles from the load that needs delivered. At least that's how it would go for me.

I’ve wondered about the same thing. I run locally so it would work better for me than a lot of people. Unfortunately like has already been said, a truck just sitting tends to have problems when you do need it. I always figured one broke down truck was better than two.

 

I wonder why an insurance company wouldn't rate you less if you only had one driver for two trucks. I think they do that with cars.

 

I do. And right now is a perfect example why I do lol.

 

I do. 1 driver 2 trucks, 2 trailers only adds a couple hundred dollars per year for insurance. Plate was a bit more than I wanted to pay.

Already paid for itself when new one had to go to body shop. Zero downtime instead of 5 weeks.

 

Well have not needed to run my spare in almost 5 years. Its now sold waiting to be picked up. Just carried Non trucking insurance policy. About 1500 per year. Under 5,000 miles annually you are 2290 exempt.

Sitting around is not good and expensive. But like having the option. Or in a pinch just run out and buy a cheap truck to work. Once rented one at a fair rate from a buddy. His terms were more than reasonable. But in the end, should have sat at home and waited. I was spinning wheels just to stay busy.

 

Just keep the hobby truck in your personal name and write a lease as needed.
