Ok...I changed the direction that I was going to go. I have an older RCI 6300F but it is larger than I can use plus I want to use the cig. lighter as a source for my radio. I pulled out a couple NOS radios that I have had for a number of years. I realize these are both the same radios (I think) ... The Uniden 66XL is made in the Philippines while the Cobra 25 (Greeen LED's) is made in China. Of the two radios is one better than the other as for has transmitting and recieving capbilities? For a radio of equal size are there other radios that would be better? What direction would you go? I never realized that these smaller cars have very limited space. Thanks for your replies in advance.

Ok...now that I have learned that it is best to hook directly to the battery for the power source .... I am now considering using my RCI 6300F which I bought used a number of years ago. Anyone know much about this radio? The good or the bad? Thanks in advance.

I don't know anything about that 6300f, looks to be similar to a Galaxy 88, but with a six-digit frequency counter. Both the Uniden and the Cobra are good radios, the Philippines radios do have a reputation of being built better, but that Cobra is probably equally as good. When I googled the 6300, I found a spec for its current draw, btw. It's 3.8amps@13.8 volts. Your cigarette lighter should power it even. If you are going to run straight to the battery, you need to fuse your leads as close to the battery as you can, to prevent a short and fire.

What are you planning on using for an antenna? Do you have a way to check SWR?

Sounds like a good setup, I think you will be pleased with any of those radios. I'd go buy an swr meter, just to make sure your good, and let it rip.

I had the higher power version of the 6300 back in my pre-ham days years ago it was a decent radio as far as exports go..

I don't know if they still make a low and high power version of this radio or not but if yours is the bigger of the two it will need to be wired direct to the battery for sure..

    josh.c Thanks this.

I guess I assumed it was the low power version. I figured the high power version was a new thing, obviously it's not.

Is it the one with the big heat sink on the bottom? That'd be the biggun...definitely have to run off the battery.
