I'm in Indiana. I'm interested in getting my CDL. Specifically, I desire driving dump trucks, but I want my CDL A, manual trans. Anyways, I could get the permit, and take the test and rent the truck for the test and DOT physical and all that for well, well under 1000 dollars.
The question comes with actually learning to drive the truck itself. It will cost 4 grand to go to a 3 week school to learn to drive. Is there any other way? It's not as if I can get my permit and ask a random owner operator if I can borrow their truck for a few hours but I just can't fathom having to get a loan for 4 grand for a 3 week course. If I have to, I have to...but I am wondering if anyone knows of another way?

Maybe get the cdl school free. Many drivers on this forum went through their state WIOA Program.

Look into the community colleges in your area, there may be a class you can take thru one of them that will cost less.

I'm doing the WIOA route Chinatown is talking about. Try searching CDL and see what you find DWD - INTraining

You can’t just rent a truck and take a test.

I got mine through a community college and basically did exactly what you're looking to do. Cement mixer for a little under a year. 6 years in a dump, then bumped my head somewhere and bought my own road tractor. The college let me pay by the hour since I couldn't afford to take the time off from work.
