So I transferred to Ohio with my company in order to start the CDL training program they offer and eventually go to a driver position once finished. I am from WV and have a house and family here but simply put I am working out of the Ohio barn then I come home then I go back. I wish to keep my residency as WV since I have no intentions of moving to Ohio. Is there anything I can do to keep my WV residency license and still obtain my CDL in Ohio? I was told that I would have to surrender my WV license in order to drive at the Ohio terminal. My company is a major LTL company if that matters any.

I'm guessing OH requires you to get a OH license when you test for the CDL. I know many people transfer their license. So I would think you would just need to change it back to WV when you get home.

Read your state laws in WV. Every state is different, but for most, a drivers license does not define residency. Your bigger problem will be state income taxes and getting the company to pay to WV if your going to remain a resident of WV. But if the company excepts your official residence address in WV, then it shouldn't be an issue with state taxes or an out of state CDL in Ohio. To get the CDL in Ohio you have to have a Ohio address? The barn you work out of?

As far as I was told I will need to surrender my WV license which in turn I will possibly have to show a Ohio residency address to get the license there. And by barn I mean terminal I work out of.

You can't have more than one license at a time and if you're testing in Ohio you'll get a license there

After you get the CDL you can transfer back to WV if you want. Not sure why the company cares what state your CDL is in

I looked into doing that when I bought my truck. Was going to move to Oregon on paper to take the test then transfer back to Washington

No. Federal rules require only one license, and it must be from the state you live in. To get an Ohio license for work without actually establishing residency there, at least temporarily, is not legal. If your company will not allow you to train and test on a WV CDL permit then you will have to either go elsewhere or comply with the Ohio residency requirements to obtain an Ohio CDL/CLP.

Which LTL company is this? Usually the state your CDL is issued from doesn't matter to most companies but your company may have a policy of only hiring drivers that live in a specific area or certain distance from the terminal. That may be why your company wants you to have an Ohio address and CDL to meet their hiring criteria for that barn. As you may already know from working at their WV barn, LTL drivers usually live real close to their barn to cut down on the commute time since they tend to only get their 10 off and back at it.

Now, as others have said above this may just be so you can complete their in-house CDL training and test with their group, after getting your CDL in Ohio you may be able to transfer it back to WV. That said, very few states care anymore where you actually have your permit from or test, our third party test site in Pennsylvania can administer the skills and road test for drivers from almost every state. The big exception is California and Illinois as they don't recognize out of state skills exams. This may be the case for you with WV or OH?

I would ask them for clarity, is the Ohio CDL policy a company policy for hiring criteria or is it so their tester can complete your skills and road exam after training?

    Mountaineer8941 Thanks this.

Ok so I spoke with the trainer and he is confident that I will eventually have to get a Ohio license since I’m goi g to be running out of a Ohio terminal full time . Checked the BMV website for Ohio and it states
“out-of-state applicants may take the Ohio CDL skills test with an out-of-state CLP as long as the driver presents a current out-of-state driver license and a certificate from an Ohio truck driving school”

So I explained this to the trainer and told him I would need a certificate of completion and he said they would not give those out until I received my actual CDL license. Looks like I’m gonna be forced into changing my stuff from wv to Ohio.

Sounds like a real winning training group, there should be better standards for training and testing.

So call wv and ask them if they accept the Ohio cpl and the results of an Ohio skills test, they have to give that to you to get your cdl.

Frustrating indeed! I do not plan on living full time out there as my kids are in a great school in WV and my fiancé has a good job. So moving the family to relocate is out of question but I have a feeling I will have to change something to drive there. I’ll call the local DMV here in WV and ask them

There are thousands of trucking companies that are based in one state and have drivers from other states. Their drivers keep their licenses in their home state. I'm thinking you will find that Wv is going to tell you that if you reside there you license must be there. Something just seems off here if they want you to keep your license in Ohio permanently and not just to get your CDL. Heck I was trained to drive a truck in Montana, used the companies address as my residence then after I got my license, I just transfered it home to Tx, where I was living then..
