Getting a CDL in one state but living in another? Time sensitive

I'm guessing OH requires you to get a OH license when you test for the CDL. I know many people transfer their license. So I would think you would just need to change it back to WV when you get home.

 

Read your state laws in WV. Every state is different, but for most, a drivers license does not define residency. Your bigger problem will be state income taxes and getting the company to pay to WV if your going to remain a resident of WV. But if the company excepts your official residence address in WV, then it shouldn't be an issue with state taxes or an out of state CDL in Ohio. To get the CDL in Ohio you have to have a Ohio address? The barn you work out of?

 

You can't have more than one license at a time and if you're testing in Ohio you'll get a license there

After you get the CDL you can transfer back to WV if you want. Not sure why the company cares what state your CDL is in

No. Federal rules require only one license, and it must be from the state you live in. To get an Ohio license for work without actually establishing residency there, at least temporarily, is not legal. If your company will not allow you to train and test on a WV CDL permit then you will have to either go elsewhere or comply with the Ohio residency requirements to obtain an Ohio CDL/CLP.

Which LTL company is this? Usually the state your CDL is issued from doesn't matter to most companies but your company may have a policy of only hiring drivers that live in a specific area or certain distance from the terminal. That may be why your company wants you to have an Ohio address and CDL to meet their hiring criteria for that barn. As you may already know from working at their WV barn, LTL drivers usually live real close to their barn to cut down on the commute time since they tend to only get their 10 off and back at it.

Now, as others have said above this may just be so you can complete their in-house CDL training and test with their group, after getting your CDL in Ohio you may be able to transfer it back to WV. That said, very few states care anymore where you actually have your permit from or test, our third party test site in Pennsylvania can administer the skills and road test for drivers from almost every state. The big exception is California and Illinois as they don't recognize out of state skills exams. This may be the case for you with WV or OH?

I would ask them for clarity, is the Ohio CDL policy a company policy for hiring criteria or is it so their tester can complete your skills and road exam after training?

 

Sounds like a real winning training group, there should be better standards for training and testing.

So call wv and ask them if they accept the Ohio cpl and the results of an Ohio skills test, they have to give that to you to get your cdl.
