Have a run Wednesday to Ithica, NY. First time to that area. So far weather looks pretty good but you never know. Was wondering if anyone can fill me in about how they keep the roads up if the weather goes south. Also best route from Hagerstown. Looks like up I81 through Scranton. I know the roads can get a little tricky that way but have driven that way on other runs. Don’t know if anyone has a better route. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

I would take 81 to 11 & 15 through PA, then NY-17 East to NY-13 North into Ithaca. Staying on 81 into NY and taking NY-79 into town is also an option. You could also take NY-17 West from Binghamton to NY-13 or NY-34, but that’s a little out of the way.

Ithaca sits in the bottom of a valley at the south end of one of the Finger Lakes, so your approach into town will be a little steep. Ithaca doesn’t get any worse weather than the rest of the area, and the roads I mentioned should be well maintained. Lots of trucks travel those routes every day.

    Good luck.

Where are you headed? I lived up that way. Those folks know how to manage snow. More than likely, 79 is your best bet.

R.E. Michel on E. Lee Street. Doesn’t look too bad. The route you all suggested is probably the one I’ll take. Thanks for all the good info.

NY takes very good care of the roads compared to PA. Night and day difference I live right on the state line off 81.

Pretty sure you want to be in Utica, NY... double check your bills.

    1) There is no Lee Stree in Ithaca
    2) RE Michels is on Lee Street in Utica.

I do want Utica. Thanks for the catch. I would have caught it on my final check but good to find out sooner. Sorry for the screw up. Was told Ithica by my dispatch. With the run not till Wednesday I didn’t double check yet. Oh well that’s why you always need to double check. Got some good info for any runs to Ithica though. Any thoughts on new route would be appreciated. Thanks.

That customer in Utica should be pretty easy to get to. From Binghamton, I would take NY-12 all the way into Utica, get off at NY 5S, take that east to Genessee St. North, then turn right onto Lee St. A lot of OTR drivers will take 81 to Syracuse, then hop on I-90 East. Lee St. from Exit 31 on I-90 is pretty straightforward.

NY-12 is a good road, and will save you time and miles, but staying on 81 avoids the small towns and might be a better option depending on the weather.

    Safe travels.

Checked Google and it shows I81 to NY8. Just wondering if NY12 is better than 8. Are both roads dual lane to Utica? Of course as you said it will depend on weather. Thanks.
